12 weeks 5 days scan. High NT and High Free Beta HCG

Hi!

From the UK!

I’ve been crying for 3 days straight. On Tuesday we had our NT scan, baby was measuring ahead at 12 weeks 5 days and everything looked good however when the sonographer measured the NT behind the baby’s neck it come in as 4.1mm (threshold here is 3.5mm).

I got booked in to see the Fetal Medicine Consultant today (2 days later) where he told me my 12 weeks blood had come back 1 in 23 for DS, 1 in 5000 for Edward’s/Pataus.
My Free Beta HCG came back as 2.33 MoM just over the threshold which elevates my risk of DS. My PAPPA-A came back as 1.87 MoM which lowers my risk slightly (one positive)
They said my bloods alone wouldn’t be a concern but combining the HCG and NT measurement this is what is making me high risk of 1 in 23.

We opted for the CVS there and then and the results should be back by Tuesday. Annoyingly as we are coming up to a weekend it delays the results getting back to us.

I’m 31, husband 33 and we have a healthy child already.

I feel absolutely distraught and so anxious and not sure how I am going to get through these next few days before the results come back.

Please send me some positive stories to lift me!

The stats are thrown out by a computer that relies on numbers. My son had a slightly raised NT and was still given 1 in 35 just for that, and he’s fine. I know how stressed out you feel, please dont resign yourself to bad news yet.

Thank you 💕 @LuckyMoonstone .. I somehow feel so alone in this and keep thinking why me. Honestly it has been the worst 3 days of my life, trying to focus on something else but it is so hard!

@HoPeFul1993The night before I was due to get the results of the NIPT I was so nervous I had to have a glass of wine to calm my nerves and get me through to the next day!

My DS 2 was also high risk on bloods and nuchal measurement. I actually can't remember the ratio but it was significant. In those days no NIPT - straight to amnio. All was absolutely fine. Fingers crossed you'll get the same news.

That’s amazing! And gives me hope. I’m praying I have the same outcome 🙏🏻

After researching - my HCG is actually still within the bracket (0.5-2.5MoM) but just because it’s combined with the high NT that’s what’s making it another marker.
Anyway, I need to try and distract myself for the next 4 days!

Give ARC a call if you haven’t already - they helped me so much during this unbearable time between tests and results 💛

Just had a private scan - structurally baby is perfect, brain, heart, nasal bone, measuring ahead which is a positive sign as a baby with DS usually measures behind.

So the only main soft marker we have is the increased NT. Not out of the woods yet, but gives me a bit more of hope before the weekend and our CVS results! 😊

First CVS results were clear for T21,13 & 18!! Over the first hurdle, now fingers crossed the whole microarray comes back soon and is also clear!

Hi @HoPeFul1993 i’ve been going through the same in my pregnancy (now 37 weeks) so feel for you a great deal (5mm NT at 12 week scan). It’s absolute hell on earth going through what you’re currently dealing with, but over the moon to see you’ve since had a good scan and clear initial cvs! Take good care of yourself and I have everything crossed that clear results and normal scans keep coming your way 😁x

Hey @OneDayHope thank you for commenting 😊 it’s so helpful seeing people who are / have been in a similar situation as I felt so isolated first of all.

It has been the worst week of my life, and I feel absolutely awful for anyone having to go through this.

I feel a huge relief that the first results are back, and have allowed myself to start to enjoy the pregnancy (kinda) but I still feel a massive weight on my shoulders until we have full confirmation baby is ok and we have a fair long while until we have that sign off as I’m only just turning 14 weeks tomorrow.

I think our risk factor of an issue arising now has dropped a bit so that makes me hopeful but it’s not going to be the most enjoyable of pregnancies (if everything comes back ok) as I am going to be worried sick!

Do you mind me asking whether your bloods came back ok at your 12 week screening? I feel like my ‘elevated’ HCG is making me worry even though it’s within bracket but then I am still being sick so maybe that’s why it is high. I was sick a lot with our daughter, so it’s no change really!

xx

@HoPeFul1993 It is so isolating, and down right terrifying, there’s no way to sugar coat what you’re having to deal with. I’ve been very up and down throughout the pregnancy, I didn’t buy a single thing until after 28 wk scan I was that nervous! The nerves waiting for results/scans are like nothing else, for me it was v important I stayed busy, but the relief after some positive news is phenomenal, so just ride the waves and make the most of positive news because it means so much - remember the NT is not diagnostic but the results you’re receiving are. For me bloods were fine, it was the 5mm NT making it high risk of something being wrong. I remember being bundled into a side room straight after my 12 wk scan and being told there’s just a 50% chance of baby being healthy, whilst i’ve never forgotten that, confidence builds bit by bit as normal results come through. I hope you don’t have much longer to wait for next lot of results x
