Baby small head circumference

Hi,

just looking for some advice, please be honest I want to hear all outcomes positive or negative.

At my 20 week scan my baby’s head was on the 7th centile, there seemed to be no worries as no referrals were made. When I was 29 weeks pregnant I went into triage for reduced movements and they booked me for a scan. On that scan baby girls head was on the 5th centile in which they then made a referral to the fetal medicine team. They didn’t seem to be majorly concerned as baby was growing nicely along her lines.

i am now 34 weeks pregnant and just had my scan with the consultant. Baby’s head now is now below the 1% centile. Consultant has said she is unsure why baby’s head is so small as fluid around baby and blood flow to brain and everything else on scan is all good, including size of babies femur and stomach. Consultant did say it maybe less because baby is low into the cervix now.

the consultant has referred me to St George’s hospital, in which I have an appointment tomorrow for another scan and a potential MRI and now left worrying.

please can anyone share any similar experiences and the outcomes.

Hi OP, congratulations on your pregnancy! We had something a bit similar, at our 20 week scan DD was measuring nicely in the 40th/50th percentiles for everything except her head which was on the 9th percentile. The sonographer was not concerned at all and made a stupid comment like "oh some people just wear smaller hats than others, it's like that." Honestly I was absolutely sick with worry for the rest of the pregnancy, convinced something was wrong, I did have a long chat with the midwife about it after the scan and she was quite annoyed the sonographer had even mentioned it, she said firstly there is a margin of error on these scans that they don't mention and secondly babies heads are so small anyway they're talking about millimeters here, combine those two together and it's very easy to whip up a new mum into a panic! Also the scale includes boys and girls, and girls are statistically more likely to be born smaller than boys, but they all get measured against the same line.

DD was born healthy at term with a perfect head, I often struggle to get her tshirts on.

I hope your appointment goes well tomorrow, I know it's so hard not to worry, but the fact all your other tests have been fine is a great sign. ❤️

Yes i had similar at my 20 week scan. Everything was measuring around 40 centile and head was on 8th. They also didn’t seem concerned but I was! I then paid for a private scan and they measured the head on the 20th. They said it’s really difficult to accurately measure especially if baby is sitting very low. At a scan recently, the head was on 50th!!
really hope it’s all ok tomorrow xx
