HELP! Both kidneys on one side at 20 week scan

Hi all, I have had my 20 week anomaly scan and all was going well until the sonographer told me he could only see one kidney, and perhaps a second kidney (not confirmed) below it on the same side.

I have been a complete mess ever since and riddled with anxiety. Does anyone have any similar experiences they would be kind enough to share please? I have a follow up with fetal medicine in a couple of days but honestly I don't know how I'll cope until then.

Any advice/info would be very much appreciated 😊

I myself only have one kidney! Not discovered until later on in life and I have had no problems related to it, that’s all the reassurance I have and I know it’s anecdotal, but hoping all will be okay for you and your little one 💐

My dad only has one working kidney since birth. 67 and still going. He didnt know til he was in his 40s and had the one that had never been working removed. Dont panic. Wait for the doctor to discuss the implications.

Thank you both so much for the reassurance. It just came as such a big shock and despite seeing stories of normality I can't help but panic.

I think what's even more concerning is the potential pelvic kidney on the same side as the normal kidney. We will be seeing the consultant next week so hopefully will have more answers. The wait is excruciating!

@5431go do you know if you were placed on any medication at birth as a precautionary measure?

Sorry just realised you said it was only discovered later in life ☺️
