Papp A

Hi, I've been given a papp a result of 0.61 and the midwife has said its low. I haven't been given much information on this besides having growth scans later on in the pregnancy as I'm currently 16 weeks and it's my first pregnancy so it's making me a little anxious. Has anyone experienced this?x

It's not low honestly. Trusts vary as to what they consider low but most don't do anything unless it's less than 0.4 and 0.2 or below is where the real concern lies. I'm surprised they want to do growth scans unless there are other factors? It's up to you if you want to accept or decline those.

I had low Papp A in my third pregnancy, (0.31) I had extra scans and then developed severe pre eclampsia right at the end of the pregnancy at 39w and was very poorly. Baby was born the next day and was absolutely fine.

They will monitor your closely for this reason - it can cause problems but mostly does not.

I came here to discuss as I also have low papp A, however as the first PP has pointed out, yours is not considered low at 0.61 anyway! Not sure the midwife even mentioned it to you. The RCOG guidelines consider low papp A to be under 0.4 and my hospital use an even lower cut-off than this. So I wouldn't be worrying at all OP.

I'm a fetal medicine midwife. That result is totally normal. Enjoy your pregnancy.

I had low papp-a, but mine was lower than that. I thought it was usually less than 0.4 that was considered low. I had extra growth scans and took aspirin. One of the growth scans showed reduced growth and I was induced at 37 weeks, so if it happened to me again, I would just be prepared for an induction (though you can refuse of course). It was nice having extra scans, and baby is now 12 months old and perfectly healthy.
