NT 3.8

So today me and my husband went for our 12 week scan. We have a 3yo and have been trying for another baby since the back end of 2021. Due to this, we were able to access early scans. On the first one at around 5 weeks, it showed two sacs however on the next scan about 7 weeks there was only one. We had looked into this and it is fairly common.

So today wasn't our first scan but today baby wouldn't get into a good position to be measured. The sonographer was prodding and poking me to get baby to move but he/she wouldn't. So I had to do some wiggling and then take a walk. Again she still struggled to get measurements.

She did eventually get some, and was measuring at 13 +2 or 13+3 on some others. We had asked for all the tests so she did the NT and it was measured at 3.8mm at the highest. It was 3.6mm at one point.

So we had the chat in the quiet room but I'll be honest, my mind was in overdrive and I didn't know what to think.

I had my bloods taken over a week ago and nothing abnormal came back but they have taken them again today to put them together with todays results to give me a result. I'm also 36 so I think there is a high chance the results will come back 'high risk'.

Just absolutely gutted and don't know what to think. Sick of trying to find a light at the end of the tunnel on google. It's frying my brain.

The midwives did say it could be nothing, but it also could be something. Many women get high scores but they end up with nothing to worry about.

I have an appointment for a detailed scan (I think) on Monday. I'm not really sure what they will entail and whether that will give me a better idea of what we're dealing with.

Has anyone else been in a similar situation?

Hi there,

With my first the NT measurement at the 12 week scan was 3.2mm, and everything was absolutely fine! He’s 3 now and we’ve had no problems with anything at all. I can back high risk when combined with the blood tests so had the NIPT test which came back low risk for all of the abnormalities it tests for.

The NT grows as the baby grows, so if you’re measuring above 13 weeks it could just be that the NT is thicker because you’re a bit further along. If you’d had the measurement done at 12 weeks it may well have been a lot smaller, if that makes sense!

I highly recommend the NIPT blood test to put your mind at ease, it’s much more accurate than the combined test. Depending where you live they’ll most likely offer it to you on the NHS if you come back as high risk on the combined test.

I know how much of a rabbit hole your brain goes down though so I really feel for you! It could be absolutely nothing to worry about.

Thank you for your reply.

I am really hoping that is the case but the not knowing is going to be the worst.

I do vaguely remember my midwife at my first appointment telling me about a test they do if you come back high risk, but it's not offered to everyone because it's so expensive. I think that will be the NIPT test?

Went to my follow up appointment today. Couldn't have the CVS as couldn't get to placenta, so now got to wait until Monday to have the amino as I'm not quite 15 weeks yet.

More waiting.

It's driving me nuts.

Couldn’t pass without messaging. We had an NT measurement of 4.2mm at around 12.5 weeks with our son. It caused endless worry for us too and we had the CVS but then the results took a month to come back (a mixture of Covid and the sample not growing fast enough). It was an awful, worrying time so I really feel for you. Everything was ok for us. The results came back fine and our son is now almost three and thriving. I hope this offers some hope that everything can be ok even with a raised NT level. The nuchal fold is only a marker for possible issues and with no other markers and the NT only slightly elevated, hopefully all will be well for you too. Sending love and a big hug xxx

Sending much love to you at this time of waiting. My little boy had a nuchal translucency measurement of 3.6mm at our 12 week scan. I was 39 at the time. We were taken to a side room, handed tissues and bottled water. It was not well handled. Very doom and gloom!

Right now! He’s here beside me at 9 months old, snoring away and thriving - I on the other hand am much sleep deprived although very much in love with him!! He’s meeting all his milestones and totally fine. I had amnio as I really wanted to know for sure. That showed no chromosomal abnormalities. My birth was plain sailing. He is a very chilled baby!

I read everything I could, had every test possible, and prepared for every possible outcome. But all is well.

My consultant essentially told me the best thing was to keep busy during my pregancy. But the waiting was awful. Just awful. So I feel for you. xx

Thank you both for your replies. I am seeing more reasons than not for good news for myself but I don't want to get too carried away incase mine goes the other way. It really has given me comfort though! I will update when I've had my results x

To update anyone that may see this with similar results, I had my amino last Monday where the specialist also did my measurements and stats for the 16 week scan. He said everything looked absolutely fine from the scan so was hopeful with the results. Got my results yesterday and was all clear for DS, patau and Edward's. Now just waiting for the results of the microarray.
