Vomited during glucose test!

Hi all,

I did my glucose test yesterday and an hour after consuming the drink I came over all hot, sweaty and dizzy and vomited it all back up.

I now have to go back to do it again next week. They said they would find me another drink to drink and I could get anti sickness medication from my GP.

I am now worried I have gestational diabetes! I saw midwife on Thursday and there was no protein or sugar in my urine. Risk factors are being overweight and my ethnicity but no other risk factors. I am 26 weeks today.

I did ask 2 nurses does this indicate I am diabetic and they both said no. One furrowed her brow as if to say of course not. She said it means you didn't like the drink lol.

Has anyone else vomited after the glucose test and been diagnosed with GD?

Worried now Confused

Don't worry, the drink is disgusting and I really had to work hard not to puke. They told me if I did puke (which I very nearly did) that they would repeat the test in hospital (via bloods I think) rather than another drink. I ended up clear of GD.

I nearly vomited, and came >< this close to feinting (I was ushered back into a little room with a comfy reclining chair when another woman in the waiting room realised I was kneeling on the (cool, cool floor) with my head on the waiting room chair seat (I was unable to do anything more than stay roughly upright and conscious - I couldn't call for help myself!)

Came back with perfect blood sugar response - it's just that fasting, then downing a glass of syrup stuff is bloody awful.

The drink is disgusting I had to work hard not to puke too. It put me off sweet drinks for years. I did plenty of puking at loads of stuff throughout my pregnancies.

You are not alone. That drink makes even non-pregnant people barf. I administer these tests several times a week. They’re vile. Also going without food for such a long period when pregnant is likely to make you feel awful anyway.

I puked! Had to re-do the test, and I had loads of risk factors/indicators including being old, a huge baby and my mother having GD and now type 2 diabetes (not weight induced).

Thankfully I did not have GD.

Thanks guys this is really reassuring!

I panicked because I knew it wasn't the drink itself that turned my stomach even though it was rank, as I would've thrown up nearly immediately. It was an hour later so obviously it was whatever it did to my blood sugars that sent me into a hypo like state which made me worry it is GD.

No point worrying I suppose as plenty of people don't even have symptoms so will have to wait and see anyhow.

Will get anti sickness meds from DR.

Texted my midwife and she confirmed there is no link between diabetes and not being able to tolerate the drink.

Why couldn't they give us bloody apple juice! Grin
