NIPT question

Evening ladies

I’ve got my appointment tomorrow to take blood for NIPT, can I refuse what I assume is the ‘complementary’ scan that goes with it? Or is it part of the test? No concerns over baby and low chance odds, just taking the test through personal choice. I just want to avoid unnecessary scans if I can.

thanks x

Why?

Fleur405 · 12/10/2022 19:56

Of course you can refuse. It may mean the results won’t be so accurate, you will have to ask them. Ultrasounds are completely safe though so not sure what the concern is.

You need to have had the dating scan, and they'll need a copy. The complimentary scan is essentially just a dating scan. I suppose any private company can insist that their nipt is dependent on their scan, but there's no good reason so call in advance and check so you can go elsewhere if they won't let you.

I'm assuming you've had the nhs dating scan.

Thanks yes I’ve had the dating scan so will bring my notes. It said somewhere on the website that it’s best to leave 2 weeks between scans and this has been 9 days so I’m in 2 minds about it.

I had the NIPT without the scan, however this was only possible as I could show I had the scan notes from my dating scan which the clinic I booked the NIPT with accepted in lieu of them performing a scan themselves. My dating scan had to have occurred within the last 14 days of having the bloods drawn for the NIPT test. I'd check with your clinic what their policy is. I paid less as I only needed the blood test and no scan with the consultant. This was in London.

I had the harmony recently and asked to skip the scan as I was having others regularly. They said it was compulsory as they won’t take the blood till they’ve seen the hb on the day.

Thanks all, had the scan, just waiting for results now!
