Cvs test and possible exomphalos

We attended our 12 week scan last week and were told the NT fluid was 3.9mm and there was a possible exomphalos whereby the bowel was exposed.

After a week wait we are seeing a fetal specialist tomorrow for a CVS test, though my screening bloods came back lower than they were expecting I think around 1 in 300 for downs and 1 in 400 for Edwards and the other.

What should I expect at the CVS? Do they give you initial results at the appointment?

In all honesty it feels like the chromosome issue is probably the least of our worries. If anyone has experienced similar regardless of the outcome I'd love to hear

Hi, how are you doing? I don't have any experience of your situation but I have had an amniocentesis as I was too far along for a CVS and the results take a few days to come back so you don't get them on the day the sample was taken. It took 2 or 3 days for the initial results to come back and around 2 weeks for the full results to come back.

From reading your post it looks like you will have had the CVS by now? I hope it went well and wasn't too uncomfortable. I hope you get your results soon, I know the waiting for answers is really tough.

Hi thanks for asking, I'm not doing great. We saw the fetal specialist on Tuesday and unfortunately he confirmed baby has exomphalos. I wasn't able to have a CVS as my placenta is at the back, but they also felt with the exomphalos a amniocentesis test would be more appropriate. I have to wait another week for that as I'm not quite 15 weeks. The wait is torture, they have told us that 80% of babies with exomphalos have another issue of some sort- so it certainly feels like the odds are against us. I'm glad to hear you got results fairly quickly, we were told 3 weeks which again seems such a long time to wait. The heartbreaking thing is having to be more pregnant before any decisions can be made.
I'm barely sleeping, can't stomach much and am just desperately sad. X

What a worrying time for you. I hope that you have some support and the time passes quickly.

I have been where you are and the wait is horrendous . The cvs is scary but over quickly .
I have no advice because you just have to ride it out but good luck .

How are you doing @Ellynclare ?

Ellynclare · 14/09/2022 19:40

Not too bad thank you. Had my amniocentesis last week so now the dreaded wait for full results which can be up to 3 weeks. The nightmare continues x

Hi, just thinking of you and wondering how you are? Hope you are okay.

Sorry you are going through this. I just thought I'd say that might son had an exomphalos with exposed bowel. He was operated on the day after he was born and is now a completely healthy 13 year old.

Ellynclare · 06/10/2023 17:18

It did thank you. My baby girl is now 8 months old and thriving after a terrible pregnancy and start to life x
