Abnormal 20 wk Scan referred to Fetal Medicine Unit

Hi all,

Had my 20 week scan yesterday completed by 2 sonographers who then informed me at the end that they will be forwarding my scan results to the Fetal Medicine Unit for assessment & it is likely I will be seeing consultants there next week.

absolutley heartbroken & confused as at 12 wk scan told healthy baby everything correct, had a 16 wk scan everything in place then and now the words on my scan report are

‘The fetal chest appeared to have an indentation to the anterior aspect which gave it an irregular outline’

on the scan photo the chest also looks indented?

has anyone had similar experience & positive outcomes?

thank you.

Hi @MrsSMumma I don't have any experience of this exact situation but my baby has an abnormality which was picked up on the 20 week scan. I was referred to fetal medicine so I can relate to how upsetting this is and the waiting for answers is really hard.

I hope you get your appointment through soon and that it goes well. Wishing you the best.

Pectus excavatum? I was born with this and it’s caused no issues at all. Lots of people have it.

Thank you for replying and same to you it’s such a shock isn’t it? It’s really rocked my world.

How are you doing @MrsSMumma ?

MrsSMumma · 19/07/2022 23:34

@Cantchoosename still terribly worried my appointment at FMU isn’t until the end of this week so an extremely long time to wait but I am trying to be as hopeful as I can🙏 How are you?

I haven’t been through this myself nor heard of it but I have had a similar experience where I was told all was fine at the 12 week scan at 16 week scan to be told there is major abnormalities at the 20 week scan and I had to wait 5 long days to be seen in fetal medicine to confirm what was going on! The stress was unreal and it was one of the darkest times of my life and the months that followed. When is your next scan?

Wallabyone · 24/07/2022 11:45

Hope you're doing ok and that the appointment went well x

Like circleblue said, I would assume pectus excavatum too. I also have this and am fine, so try not to worry. I hope everything goes well for you and your baby

Cantchoosename · 24/07/2022 20:21

I am okay thanks @MrsSMumma. Hope your scan went well.

You poor thing. I experienced similar and it's such a worrying time but the FMU are amazing and really look after you. My son is 9 now but I will never forget how well they looked after us at the FMU. We saw the same consultant each time and she was at the birth too which was really nice.
