Fetal MRI experience

Hi everyone. I'm just looking for some advice really. I have a fetal MRI scan on Thursday due to them picking up a small cavum on an ultrasound. I have absolutely no idea what to expect or even if we will get the results the same day. I really don't want to do it as I'm terrified that they'll tell me there's something seriously wrong with my baby. Can anyone share their stories on the MRI? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks! X

Hi, I have had a few fetal MRIs and I can say that the scan itself is fine, the machine can feel a little claustrophobic but I just kept my eyes closed so I couldn’t see and that was ok. It is very noisy but you are provided with headphones which quieten down a lot of the noise. I always got to have a chat with my consultant after my MRIs and she gave us a rough view of what she had seen on the scan, and our scans were then discussed in a big meeting the following week where a formal report was then finalised. I’m not sure if that’s the same in all hospitals though. Wishing you lots of luck and I hope you get good news on Thursday.

Thank you so much @SantiagoSister. I am not so much nervous for the scan but the results. The wait is going to be killer. I hope they give us a brief overview of what they see once over. It's the scariest time x

I hope they give you some information after your scan today too, being left in limbo is horrible. I actually asked to come back up to the consultant room after my scan so I could see the images myself and have them explained to me, which they kindly let me do. So may be worth an ask when you’re there today. Wishing you lots of luck x

Thank you @SantiagoSister I had the scan which was fine. They gave me no indication as to what the results could be. Supposed to have an appointment with fetal medicine tomorrow but my MRI results aren't even back yet and the lady on the phone said they don't have any appointments for "ages" so not very helpful 🙄

I’m glad your scan went well @eastview. I hope you’ve managed to have an appointment now? Keeping my fingers crossed for good news for you 🤞🏼

Hey @SantiagoSister I had my appointment, cavum still looks small but everything underneath looks perfect and girly is growing lovely so they aren't particularly worried. They offered me another MRI but I may refuse as outcome looks good. I currently have Covid so was unable to go to my growth scan yesterday which was rubbish

That’s great news @eastview, I’m so relieved to hear they’re happy with baby overall! Maybe it’s just down to natural individual variation why her cavum is looking a bit smaller, if everything else is looking good then that’s a great relief 😊 sorry to hear you’ve now got covid, hope you’re not too poorly with it and get well soon! Hope they can rearrange your scan for you too so you don’t have to wait too long to see little one again ❤️

I had MRI but was a few years back now.. they allowed my husband to be with me so I tilted my head back to see him and that was super helpful but I don't know if that would be the case in every trust.. I also found out the results the same day.. it was to check if one of my twins had a stroke after the other had passed away. I suppose it all depends on where you go and what for, and their own ways of working. I do wish you the best of luck and hope it all turns out ok Flowers

Oh goodness sorry I've just seen it's already happened and positive outcome Flowers
