Blood result numbers. What do they mean?

Hi all.

I've been given a 1 in 5 chance of my baby having downs based on one blood test (waiting for results of nipt).
Can anyone explain the next numbers? Or where I can find the normal ranges?

Serum hCG mom 1.40
Serum AFP mom 0.45
Inhibin-a mom 2.54
UOestriol mom 0.67

HCG 44.19ku/l
AFL 8ku/l
UOestriol 1.4nmol/l
Inhibin-a 344.6pg/ml

Thanks in advance

How old are you?

Have you had a 12week scan yet?

Elskerdeg · 30/01/2022 22:25

I'm 30.
My 12 week scan they couldn't see well enough to see anything at all. I'm 18 weeks now.

Hi, so MOM (Multiple of Medians) should be ideally close to 1. A higher number is higher than average, lower means lower. These expected averages change with how many weeks you are pregnant, ethnicity, etc.

What do you mean when you say they couldn't see anything on ultrasound? What was the NT meassurement?

Elskerdeg · 31/01/2022 08:07

They literally couldn't measure the NT. They could find the baby but due to where it was and the fact it refused to turn around (it was facing away from the camera) they couldn't see much of anything.

2.54 for inhibin-a, is there anything else that could cause this?
Seems very likely it is going to be downs syndrome doesn't it...

Hi,
of course it can! Hence the result 1:5. These test have higher false positive than the NT as well.

When will the NIPT be ready?

Elskerdeg · 31/01/2022 14:30

Okay. I hope that is the case here then

It'll have been two weeks tomorrow since I had it done. Called the midwife today but she was just saying it hasn't arrived yet. I'm stressed out with this wait.

Oh right in that case I would wait until the 20week scan before panicking. Scan is typically a best indication of results

My NIPT results came back today and.... They've messed up both samples. So I'm going to have an amnio instead.

Hoping the amino all goes well @Elskerdeg, I’m in a similar position 1 in 5 chance from the quad blood test with levels similar to yours and awaiting the NIPT results, the midwife couldn’t explain the numbers on the levels to me today, saying that the quad is harder to interpret and there wasn’t anything which stood out…
I’ve only had the NIPT today and 2 weeks feels like an age away.

@TiredIsAnUnderstatement
Thank you. Sorry to hear you are in this position too. Honestly it's been a really long two weeks. I have spent time reading up both about downs syndrome and also abortions at this stage, I guess this has helped me plan for the next steps? Its really hard waiting. Im so annoyed that I didn't even get results after all that wait too! How many weeks pregnant are you?

OP posts:
TiredIsAnUnderstatement · 02/02/2022 07:16

I bet you are, as if the wait and uncertainty isn’t bad enough, to then not get the results is so frustrating!
I’m 16+4 today. I’m the same, researching what I can so I can make the right decision for us.
It’s quite hard to speak about it to OH, he doesn’t really want to think about it until we’ve got a result and we know but I’d rather prepare myself mentally. I can think about little else right now
When are you having the amnio?
I’ll be thinking of you and hoping you get a speedy result Flowers

Update in case anyone comes across this:
Amnio came back negative for everything. Very pleased!
