Routine blood test injury

Hi ! Just had my blood taken by my midwife, and as she pulled the needle out she’s pulled my skin off too. Never ever bothered by having my blood taken but this one really hurt. It bled a lot but now has stopped and I’ve just got a plaster on it. It’s a deep cut - should I worry or is it just artificial/will scab over on a few days?

Ouch! How on earth did they do that to you?! Did they notice?
Doesn't look too bad, but keep it covered and clean and watch out for infection.

Jesus. I’ve never ever seen anyone do that taking bloods before!!
Looks like it should feel fine but you should have a word with the midwife so she doesn’t do this again!

DropYourSword · 12/01/2022 10:47

*Heal fine! Not feel fine

It bloody hurt when she pulled the needle out! I can’t think how it happened other than the needle was pushed into my skin at an angle too hard when she pulled it out . She said sorry and felt awful bless her but it was pooled with blood so I don’t think she saw how deep it was!

Yeah got a lovely peppa pig plaster on there and hope it heals over!

Jeez, was it actually a nurse who did that to you? I think I’d be unhappy with that, I’m a nurse and take blood from children and have never done a thing like that and kids move and wriggle so not an easy job sometimes. It’ll have been a sterile needle etc but I’d keep it clean and dry until it scabs over, I get bloods regularly for my illnesses and I bruise spectacularly every time from elbow to wrist but never have i been maimed like that, it’s usually the phlebotomist who does my bloods mind you. Think I’d be asking for someone else

She felt awful and said it had never happened before, must have been one of those things 🤷🏼‍♀️ Looks like it might scar! Just worried that it might have sliced my vein or something but I guess that it would Still be bleeding if that were the case .. so fingers crossed all good!

It was my midwife who is really lovely so it’s a little awkward, I could tell she felt terrible, but I think I’ll definitely be nervous when she comes to take my blood again.

Ouch! It should heal ok but may leave a bit of a mark, it's quite deep 😕 how on earth did she do that!

abbs1 · 12/01/2022 11:01

Ouch! Gosh that looks painful! Ive had loads of bloods taken in the last 3 years probably over 100 times and never had anything like that! Ive bruised a lot but not had skin come off. Looks like a cut has been made. Can you request someone else next time you need bloods taken?

Geo0905 · 12/01/2022 11:03

I don’t know, I can’t think how it’s happened!? I just know when she pulled it out it bloody hurt 😳

Same, never had any trouble before. I’m just such a worrier and can’t get my head around what happened here... so close to my previous veins!

It was probably the hub of the needle getting caught on your skin. Likely due to a manufacturing defect, if there was a tiny bit of broken plastic from the hub.
Not all needles are equal, and you'd be surprised at how many break/have defects.
There is a specific brand of drip for infants which is notorious for breaking as you insert it into babies, but all brands occasionally break.
It was almost certainly a freak accident, though that doesn't stop the pain.

I had a similar cut from when someone took my blood last year. They had used a larger needle than necessary in my opinion and took it out at a bad angle in a bit of a rush. Took ages to stop bleeding. I have a small scar there now. Just keep it clean and dry. It will scab over.

Geo0905 · 12/01/2022 11:43

@negomi90 that makes sense! She was surprised too! Good to hear that it likely isn’t her fault since she will be taking my blood quite a bit in the coming months!

@Tjsmjs thanks for sharing that’s good to hear, by the looks of it I think it might scar a bit but glad it should just heal up!
