Managing expectations on a vanishing twi

Morning everyone. A few months ago I suffered an ectopic pregnancy and had my right tube removed after a rupture. When I found out I was pregnant again (LMP 7 May) the hospital booked me for an early scan at 7 weeks. They found one baby at 3.3mm with a heartbeat and one possible baby at 2.8 but no Hb. They said I was more like 5 weeks.

They booked another scan for 8+1 and yesterday they found baby #1 at 5.3 with a strong heartbeat so it looks like they are at 6 weeks and developing normally, if quite a bit behind my expected dates. Baby #2 however is only 4mm and still no heart beat.

I know about vanishing twin syndrome and was trying to be prepared but I also don't want to "give up" on baby #2 because I feel like I'm betraying them. Can anyone offer any advice on managing expectations. My next scan is in 9 days (technically 9+4 but probably 7+4 for baby 1) and I might go insane waiting!

If your last period was 7th May then it sounds the scan is accurate for your dates.

My last period was 6th May and I’m 8+2 today.

I’m sorry about twin no.2. I can understand why you don’t want to give up just yet Flowers

Sorry, I’ve misread your post! I definitely wouldn’t worry about baby measuring behind though. You could have ovulated late, or baby could catch up by 12 weeks. The reason they don’t tend to date at this gestation is because the early stages of pregnancy can develop at very different rates in different women, but it tends to even out by 12 weeks x
