Hole in heart

Looking to hear others experiences with learning their child may have a hole in their heart. At 18 weeks the scan showed a potential hole but the doctors didn’t seem concerned. They noted it could close, might not actually be there or it’s a common surgery once born.
Sometimes the doctors relay information so casually it seems confusing especially around such an important organ.

Hi there, my 20 week scan actually did not pick anything up however at my 8 week check they picked up a heart murmur which in turn showed my son had 2 holes in his heart along with an extra vessel and a narrowed valve. We used to take him to the hospital to be monitored every few months to see how things were progressing. He is now 3 years old, both of his holes closed up by themselves, the extra vessel corrected its self and his valve is very very mild so he is not effected in any way at all. With my current pregnancy i have been offered an additional heart scan to see if this baby has any issues but so far they have not found anyrhing. Like you said the doctors were very casually listing things and i freaked out as the heart is a major organ. Thankfully the issues my son encountered were all very mild and most have corrected themselves

Hey I am in the same boat - had 20 week scan yesterday and they suspect a hole in the heart. They baby can have surgery after the birth. I’m terrified. I hope you’re ok. I’m sending my love as I know exactly what this is like xx

My partner had a hole in his heart. He was kept under monitor and eventually his hospital visits when from 6m - 1 year. He got signed off at 16 as the hole closed on its own.

Wishing you all the best x

My brother had two holes in his heart when he was born in the 70s. If he caught a cold he would normally get much more ill than the rest of us but that seemed to be the only issue. He is now a big strong 41 year old. Never had surgery and the holes closed up themselves when he was 12.

It sounds a big deal, and sometimes I'm sure it is, but not always!

Good luck.

Hi,
I had a hole in my heart discovered shortly after birth (VSD). I was monitored yearly until I was 18 and it closed itself.

I had a specialist scan for my baby around 30 weeks due to my VSD and they found the baby had the same VSD but larger than mine. We had to take him to the children's hospital once discharged from the birthing hospital. They scanned him that day and were happy to let us go home. He's now 8 months and is still being monitored every 3 months and is likely to need surgery at some point.

I think it largely depends on the size of the hole as to what will happen. Some will need surgery ASAP after birth, some will be monitored and eventually need surgery and some won't ever need surgery. In our case our baby is very healthy other than this potential need for surgery and whilst it's stressful, it's not as bad as it initially sounds in some cases.

Thank you so much for your stories. They’re very much appreciated.

@Sunshine1982flowers211111 were on the same ride. Hoping for the best for your little one.

My DD had a hole detected in her scan but it closed itself up as she developed. Just wanted to put this in here to say they arent making it up, it is possible the hole won't be there at birth.
