Waiting for CVS results

Have seen a couple of these recently but (obviously) they move fast so I thought I'd start my own.

Had a cvs a couple of days ago, we've got a 1 in 2 or possibly 1 in 3 chance of the baby having a rare chromosomal condition. We knew this pre-pregnancy and I was coping OK but having the cvs and seeing the scan etc has had a huge emotional impact on me. We're firmly decided on a termination if the condition is present, and I don't feel like I'm wavering on that, but I'm terrified about how hard it will be.

Anyway, we've got probably another couple of days to wait for the downs/edwards/pataus results (which we expect to be clear but obviously who knows) and then probably 2 weeks for the full array (which will show the condition we're really looking for).

I feel like it's going to be a very long two weeks, I feel terrible and am scared of getting ill (covid/covid symptoms) in case it affects the timing of a termination.

Anyone else waiting too?

Hi @ChalkDinosaur I'm not waiting for CVS results yet, but have had NIPT results back as high likelihood for T21 and am scheduled for CVS on Wednesday. As I know the data is not on our side I've become quite detached from it all and like you I know the scan etc will bring it all back to me. Also afraid of what lies ahead as it's likely we'll decide to TFMR and I don't know what that will involved. Am just over 13w at present.
Really hope your results come back clear, the wait is torture- I was a wreck waiting for NIPT.

That sounds really tough @lastditchattempt20. The waiting is awful isn't it?

If it helps the cvs was physically easier than I expected. I also asked the midwife about the tmfr procedure at the hospital, it helped to know a bit more about it because certain things seem to vary between hospitals (although I guess whether it's worth knowing more it depends if you're the sort of person who is helped by getting detailed info).

I found the scan hard, I had an early scan which wasn't too bad but the recent one just seemed so much more real. I'm 12 weeks. I guess at least each day is a step closer to knowing.

I hope everything goes really well on Wednesday, and that you get good news afterwards x

Thanks- Did you find that you had time to talk and ask questions at CVS appointment? The NIPT showed 95% chance of T21 and that test is 99% accurate in high risk patients (me) so we're seeing it more as a confirmation of the blood test rather than holding out much hope. I just hope everything is straightforward and we're not kept waiting longer than necessary at any point. These last few days have been heartbreaking and I know there's more to come. Just want to hide from life for a while.

lastditchattempt20 · 04/10/2020 19:22

I'm considering asking not to see the scan- I'm not sure if I'll find it harder or not to see baby again. But part of me feels like I should acknowledge this all.

ChalkDinosaur · 04/10/2020 19:28

They turned off the screen opposite the bed when I got upset (they asked first) which made it easier. Although it was reassuring to see the baby wriggling after the procedure. I asked for a photo though so at least I can look at it in the future if I want to - might be worth seeing if you can do the same? Or ask if you can take a photo on your phone?

Yes afterwards we had to wait in another room for a little bit (I think it's to check you're OK) then have blood taken (not sure if everyone has blood taken though) so during that time we spoke to the midwife. She probably wouldn't have offered up the info unprompted but it felt like a good opportunity to ask.

Are you allowed to take someone with you?

I can relate to wanting to hide away, I wish someone could just knock me out for two weeks.

@ChalkDinosaur sorry to distract from your original question! Hopefully you've had some good genetic counselling. The waiting is so hard- I hope you've got some good distraction techniques. Re: COVID If you did develop symptoms, I think you could get a test to be given the all clear to attend any appointments. But personally I'm just staying in house most of the time anyway so likelihood of infection low.

ChalkDinosaur · 04/10/2020 19:39

Ah, don't worry about that! I just want to talk around it/be a bit distracted so I don't mind at all Smile

Yes we had/have really good genetic counselling. Definitely helped us through the process, it's been a long time making the decisions about what to do.

Am being very cautious as well re covid, tbh biggest fear is that DH won't be able to come with me. But we are being quite cautious and in an area with relatively low cases. If it was up to me I'd just stay in for a couple of weeks to be sure, but have to balance it with keeping my toddler entertained/burning off some energy.

Hope you've found your hospital supportive so far and that you get good support with your cvs and afterwards, I do think the support makes a big difference.

How are you today @ChalkDinosaur ?

ChalkDinosaur · 06/10/2020 19:47

I'm OK thanks @lastditchattempt20. Anxious but better than I felt a few days ago. Got the first results back, clear as expected so now have the long wait for part two...

How are you? I hope everything goes smoothly tomorrow.

I'm glad the tests are back when and as expected. Long waits are so hard though.. have you got a distraction plan?
I'm ok I suppose. I don't know what to expect tomorrow- mainly will be helpful to speak to a specialist in person. Have felt a bit abandoned since the call came with my results. I will update when I know more. Sending positive good results vibes your way 🤞🏻🤞🏻

ChalkDinosaur · 07/10/2020 13:22

Yes, DP has a few days off coming up so we'll be able to hopefully do something to take our minds off the wait. Feels so weird to think we'll know in a week or so, after months and months of decision making and waiting. Part of me is desperate to find out, part of me doesn't want to!

Hope you get to talk to someone today and find out a bit more...
