Higher scale NT reading from a scan

Hello

I had my 12 week scan yesterday. As I was leaving she mentioned one picture showed a higher nt of 3.5 (which she said is just on the borderline) so would have to refer me for further tests. I’m waiting on my blood results now before another scan with Fetal medicine. I’m worried sick!!! Has anyone else had experience with this please? X

Hi, I had the same at my 12 week scan, my nt was 3.6 and got referred to fetel medicine, at 14 weeks the nt disappeared so they kept scanning for a few weeks, during this time I was offered the nipt test which thankfully came back low risk as I was high risk for Down syndrome 1 in 15 due to my bloods and age, I waited until my 20 week scan before deciding on any invasive test, so the 20 week didn't show any markers or they couldn't see anything wrong on the scan, also I had a heart scan at 23 weeks and this also came back clear so I never bothered going for cvs or amino, I've been having growth scans and checks every 2 to 3 weeks and now I am 34 weeks, I will admit it's been a rough pregnancy that I've not enjoyed due to the stress and worry and if I'm honest I'm still shit scared of what will be when I give birth, I've spoke to a lot of other people on this site with very similar stories to ours, some good some not so good, google will be your worst enemy and it gave me nightmares so try not to google anything until you've had more test scans etc and you know more, hopefully all is ok for you as it's just borderline xx

Hello Missy38 Thankyou for the reply...

Im waiting for my bloods and will be seen by Fetal med for another scan to check also. It’s so worrying isn’t it. I’m so glad you have had all the results back and everything seems ok. My midwife said that some baby’s do just have more fluid around them for no real reason. I suppose the upside is Atleast you got to see your baby a lot more than usual during the scans! Fingers crossed it has come down the next time I go. Baby was laying awkward and it took a long time to get a measurement anyway! Xx

Deffo is worrying, same with baby with me, was laying in a funny position and she couldn't measure him tidy, I knew this scan should have been relatively quick but mine was taking so long and she kept asking me to go walk around so baby would move, I do sometimes wonder if she actually got the measurements wrong, also she was very old women 🙈 x

Worriednewmom · 23/07/2020 10:30

Same! She made me walk around jump around shake around 😂 it’s definitely crossed my mind that she could have measured off.. if it was 3.4 so just below the both of ours, we wouldn’t have had been told or worried about it all this time. It seems mad. It’s really worried me and I’m so anxious until my bloods come back. I’m 24, I was enjoying every minute until now.. hopefully the Fetal med will give another scan and everything will be ok x

You should have quite a few scans now, I was discharged from fetel around 23 weeks and now back at my local, I've just had a 34 week scan and baby is looking good on the middle percentile and weighing 5lbs 5, so I'm happy he's putting on weight as he was a little under to start, hopefully all will work out fine as it's only a tiny tiny over and you can start enjoying the pregnancy again, I'm feeling a little more relaxed now but I still think the worst at times 🙈 x

Worriednewmom · 23/07/2020 11:54

I’m glad really atleast their being thorough! Did you get offered any more tests through nhs or pay for NIPT? I look forward to speaking with the consultant to put my mind at ease hopefully! Thankyou for the replies you have made me more relaxed.. I’m glad your little boy is growing lovely xx

Missy38 · 23/07/2020 20:53

I'm glad you feel more at ease, nothing worse than worrying all the time, yeah I was offered the nipt on the NHS and this came back low chance of the three trisomy 13,18 and 21, plus the heart scan and extra monitoring, I have another scan in 2 weeks at 36 weeks next just to monitor the growth, when is your next consultant meeting x

Worriednewmom · 23/07/2020 21:52

Thankyou!! I have my bloods back tomorrow then the Fetal medicine unit will arrange to see me and go from there I suppose... I haven’t spoken to my consultant yet I’m guessing il do it when I go for my next scan? I’m so glad you have had extra monitoring for more piece of mind! I wish they could give reasons as to why some Nt readings are higher, it must have been the position the baby was laid in lol xx

I’m in a similar position, but so far everything is looking ok.

I had an NT reading of 4.2 at my 12 week scan, but weirdly I’m another one that took ages to get the reading, the sonographer had me jumping around loads to try and move the baby so that she could get a reading. She originally said 3.9 then 4.2. I was worried sick, cried for days. Luckily my bloods were good, so I had a 1:151 risk for downs, but I went for the CVS anyway.

7 days later I had the CVS and the NT had gone down to 2.5. The CVS and array Cgh came back completely clear.

I have Fetal heart scan booked for 20 weeks, just after my anomaly scan. However, we decided to pay privately for an additional earlier fetal scan at 15 weeks which we had yesterday (my understanding is that if it wasn’t for the pandemic this would be standard, and I wanted reassurance). Thankfully the heart looks totally normal so far.

It’s a scary time, and I’ll be nervous before the 20 week scans, but I am finally starting to relax again now.

I really hope you can get some reassurance, it’s good news that your NT is only borderline high.

Missy, I have heard anything about extra monitoring scans, when did they offer those to you? After 20 weeks? I know all trusts are different. Mine didn’t offer NIPT.

Worriednewmom · 24/07/2020 15:43

Hi both!

I had blood results today and 1 in 3500 for downs and 1 in 100000 for pats and eds.. I’m waiting to see now if Fetal med will see me. Did they scan you 7 days later because you asked or they wanted too? Should I ask about CVS?

I’m so glad it’s all gone ok for you. I too would pay for a 16 week scan to check things. Can I ask what scan this was you looked for please??

It’s such a worry but the more I’m reading the more I think it’s sometimes down to the position the baby was laying in! Xx

That's Brill news, them results I would defo be happy with, I'm not sure how it works in different areas, I'm in Wales so I know the nipt is free here and they referred me to fetal medicine the same day of my 12 week scan, I was seen a week later then, the fetal medicine seen me at 14 weeks, 16 weeks 20 weeks as they did my anomalies scan and then a heart scan at 23 weeks, they then discharged me to my local hospital as there have been nothing on the scans, I have then been for growth scans at my local every 2 to 3 weeks and just to make sure all is ok, I'll have my next in 2 weeks at 36, I'm not sure what will happen then if they will see me at 38, but my consultant did say there's no reason yet why I cant go full term aslong as all stays fine xx

Missy38 · 24/07/2020 15:59

If I was you with them numbers, I would personally wait for your 20 week scan where they check everything and the heart, if you have no markers or anything on scan, I wouldn't even risk cvs or amnio, as you said it was just border and probably how baby was just laying x

Worriednewmom · 24/07/2020 16:32

Hello

I’m wales too! They did refer me to Fetal med the same day as my scan but I suppose il hear from them now that they have my blood reports.

It’s reassuring that they have seen you so often isn’t it, atleast it is piece of mind for you throughout! Yes definitley, I’m hoping they will ring soon and I can speak with them to see the next steps.

Hope everything goes ok for you xxx

Hello..
I have my scan booked in for next week at Cardiff so we will see what they say then. Does anyone know if partners are allowed with you now? It didn’t say on the letter and I can’t get through. Fingers crossed all will be ok! Xxx

OP posts:
Missy38 · 31/07/2020 23:21

Cardiff is where I went for fetal medicine also, dr Beattie is really nice, I'm sure I read you can take partners in for scans such as fetal medicine checks

sarahc336 · 01/08/2020 19:34

I haven't been allowed my partner for my fetal medicine scans in whiston near Liverpool x

Worriednewmom · 01/08/2020 19:56

Fab thankyou both... I tried to call them but their a nightmare to get hold of. Hope it comes around fast!
Hope everything is ok for you both x

Missy38 · 01/08/2020 20:11

Oh sorry I mean allowed in since the 27th of July, mine was allowed in for the first scan x

Worriednewmom · 05/08/2020 13:54

Hello ladies!

I had my scan and the Nt has come down from 3.5 to 2.8 .. the risk of downs etc was also very low at 1 in 3500. They offered me amnio but I don’t know if I’m being naive but I declined as the results of everything else seemed ok. Still worrying though. Hope everything is ok for you all xx

OP posts:
Missy38 · 05/08/2020 21:21

Brill news, totally agree, no need for invasive tests with them results, I have scan tomorrow at 36 +1, baby is really pushing on my bladder now though and the pressure is so bad, I think I really need to do my hospital bag soon lol x

Worriednewmom · 05/08/2020 22:16

Thankyou! The only thing playing on my mind is the consultant kept saying the amino could check for other abnormalities. It makes you worry doesn’t it! I’m hoping everything looks ok in the 20 week scan and I can enjoy the rest of the pregnancy.. oh how exciting!!! I hope everything goes well for you, keep us updated! Xx

OP posts:
Missy38 · 06/08/2020 09:19

This was also my worry, my final decision was based on my 20 weeks scan and the heart scan, you can still choose to have the amnio after the scan if they pick up any markers on this scan, it is scary and I still wonder if I made the right decision also, but I didn't wanna risk the chance of miscarriage or early labour as you get further along, my whole decision has been based on scans every 2 weeks from fetal which look more in depth and my local hospital, I was also told that if anything was wrong I probably wouldnt have made it to the 20th week of pregnancy so that was hard for me also where as the safe stage for most oeople is the 12 th week x

Worriednewmom · 07/11/2022 22:33

Hello @Missy38 !!!

i just came across this and thought I’d ask how your both doing? 😊
