Low amniotic fluid levels

Hello,

We had a 20 week scan a week ago which showed some anomalies. I've had a further scan on Monday with a consultant who was mostly concerned that there is very little to no amniotic fluid around the baby which is restricting it's growth (measuring around a week behind where it should be). The fluid levels were too low for amniocentesis
She thinks my waters may have broken, but I don't recall this happening.

We have an appointment with the specialists tomorrow morning and I think they are going to heavily recommend we terminate. The thing is on Monday the baby had full kidney and stomach function and the heartbeat was strong. The placenta also seems to be structurally ok.

Does anyone have any experience?

I’m so sorry @SJR86 what a worrying time - my heart goes out to you ❤️ I don’t have any experience of low amniotic fluid I’m afraid but I hope someone who does will comment very soon.

The appointment was very long and very thorough which was good.

They didn't talk about termination, just want to monitor us over the next few weeks to make sure little one continues to grow. The consultant felt there was enough fluid for the baby's lungs to develop which was a huge relief. There also weren't any markers that made him believe there could be any chromosomal anomalies.

What a rollercoaster of a week - certainly not out of the woods yet but I feel like there is a glimmer of hope.

Oh @SJR86 I think that definitely sounds positive! I am feeling some relief for you :) I really hope things continue to progress well. It’s great news that it looks as though there is enough fluid for the lungs to develop. I have read good outcomes on other forums where the amniotic fluid has been low so I really hope that’s true for you too.

I also think it’s positive that your baby’s organ development looks normal and the placenta healthy too. Plus measuring 1 week behind sounds as though that would still fit within normal range even if it’s at the lower end...?

I can empathise with the anxiety and emotional rollercoaster of a complicated pregnancy. We got worrying news at our 12 week scan, needed an amnio and had to wait until 20 weeks to see how things were looking developmentally. The days / weeks between appointments pass so slowly but you will find a way of getting through it and find strength you didn’t know you had. Hold on to hope! Keep us posted - thinking of you xxx
