Hi all,

anyone know what a high VMAX means in the middle cerebral artery?

Thank you

Your vmax doesn’t look high on that?

Depends on the reason the test is being done, and the gestation. That particular measurement is only looked at specifically in certain circumstamces and it’s very easy to measure wrong. The MCA is measured more commonly for soemthing called “PI” or pulsatility index, usually in the setting of growth restriction or decreased movements. The Vmax is measured if there is a concern about fetal anaemia for one reason or other. It’s the same blood vessel but it is very easy to get a completely incorrect Vmax measurement if you’re not specifically looking for that measure, so if it’s not relevant to your situation I wouldn’t worry about it at all. (The printout report often gives more measurements than the doctors/sonographers are actually interested in). If it is relevant I would expect it had been discussed with you prior to actually doing the scan.
Clear as mud?
Can try to explain further if needed but if you’re still wanting more detail might be best to chat with your midwife or doctor.
