Amniocentesis test

I've just had my first scan and the tests have come back with a 1 in 27 chance of the baby having down syndrome. I've decided to have the test to find out but I was wondering if anyone had had it and could tell me what to expect? Level of pain etc?

Hi. I had one 7 weeks ago. It stung a little, but was fine. It was more the results I was worried about the results & the risk of the test. But thankfully all was ok. Wishing you luck. Xx

Hey! I had an amniocentesis test done back in August. It sounds a lot worse than it actually is. My doctor used a general anaesthetic (the one that feels like a bee sting!) and that was probably the worst part of it.

I didn't want to see the needle so I avoided looking at it at all costs. The needle went in. Wasn't bad.. just felt a little bit of pressure really. I closed my eyes and held my partners hand until it was done lol. Took about 40 seconds to a minute.

Our results came back all clear. We had ours done because our baby has a possible heart defect that can sometimes be linked to genetic conditions/other health issues. Best of luck!

Hi everyone, sorry, I know this is a bit of an older thread, but I'm hoping you may be able to help. I had an amniocentesis done yesterday at the Kings College fetal medical centre in London. Currently I'm worrying myself sick about the risk of miscarriage, every twinge I think something is going wrong. Did anyone have mild cramps the day after the procedure? They're definitely mild rather than severe, but I can't help feeling panicky about them. Thank you x

@ginandgingers92 I had amnio yesterday at Jessops fmu was drained yesterday got home about 11am and stayed in bed all day got up this morning a bit achy spent most of day on sofa I find if I walk too much or stand I ache more so I'm just resting as much as possible midwife said cramping and even spotting is common for up to a week after and not to worry but any fever or severe pain to ring hope u feel better soon xx

I ended up having to have two amniocentesis tests in a week due to the hospital losing my first sample. The first time was fine and I didn't really have any cramping afterwards. The second one a week later however left me very sore (it was painful to walk to the car) and it left me with mild cramps for the rest of the day. Everything went fine for me and I'm now 19 weeks and starting to feel the baby move. I would try not to worry too much as I know they say that cramping afterwards is normal but I know it's easier said then done.

Hi ladies. I felt the same after mine. Was very anxious & yes I definitely had cramps! I actually went to hospital after a few days as I needed some reassurance, dr said there’s no way of knowing why I’ve got the cramps & if it was just part of pregnancy or linked to the amnio. It was such a stressful time. I’m now 32 weeks, but still constantly worrying about everything! Xx

@ginandgingers92 good luck to you too hope your not waiting long for results they told me I'd have the early results between 5 today and Thursday and the full result in 2 weeks I've been on edge since 5 waiting for the phone to ring

@ginanggingers92 how are you waiting is driving me crazy have you had any results yet . Mine still aren't back I spoke to fmu today and there going to chase them with the lab in morning

@Mummylanie3 I got the first lot of mine back this afternoon, I wasn't expecting them until tomorrow earliest, but my little girl is negative for downs, Edwards and pataus. I can't quite believe it. I know we're not out of the woods yet, but after a week of not knowing and worrying, to hear this was amazing. My fingers are so so crossed for you that you get the results you want, as soon as possible xx

@Ginandgingers92 I'm so pleased for you you must be so relieved with those early results I don't know what to think with mine I had a 1:25 for downs and a 1:80 for the other two I just don't know what to think hopefully have some answers tomorrow xx

I am so unsure about the amnio. We have been offered it as baby has echogenic bowels which can be a sign for down syndrome.

I'm so worried of the 1% risk. Did you have to rest after or do anything?

@wbwife they advise to take it easy for 24/48 hours after I was just drained for first 2 days had mine Monday but think that was everything building up to having it done had a few mild cramps Monday Tuesday I just laid in bed slept watched films today I'm back to normal had mine at ten am Monday morning I think if the rests are going to effect your decision to continue then it's the only way to find out to be certain people like to know also so they can prepare if they do choose to continue and research if there results are positive it's totally down to personal preference and the 1% is national statistic whichever unit ur going to have it done at ask the direct consultant what his rate is I went to Jessops hospital where they do this all day everyday and the consultant I had hadn't had anyone miscarriage after the procedure in over 5 years

@WBWIFE that risk made it a really really hard decision for me too. I was told I could essentially go about normal life afterward but I'm making sure I rest at least until the end of the week. I echo what @Mummylanie3 has said, it's really the only way to be sure, particularly if the results may have a bearing on any future decision. But it was by no means an easy decision to make. I had mine done at an incredible hospital, and it took me a good few hours to decide. They consultants explained the risk and told me that in reality the rates of miscarriage are closer to 1 in 1000, but in the consultant's words, no

Yeah I had mine done last Monday too, I'm just hoping they'll be here quicker 🤞🏼
