Fluid around baby's heart

Hi everyone

We had our anomoly scan on Friday. Everything was fine but for some fluid around the baby's heart and a 'mild right sided hypertrophy'. Has anyone else has this? We're going into the fetal medicine centre on Thursday, and it sounds like a really heavy procedure. I'm terrified, really. Does it definitely mean something is badly wrong? The person that performed the scan said sometimes, these things come to nothing. But it all needs to be looked into. I'm just thinking the worst at the moment, as I know heart defects can be related to chromosome abnormalities...but she looked so perfect and beautiful everywhere else!
Any thoughts and advice most appreciated x

I'm sorry you're in this situation. How did the appointment at the Fetal Medicine Centre go? We're a few weeks down the line but I've only just seen this thread because I don't often come into this area anymore.

Fluid was spotted around my son's heart at his 20 week scan. There was also fluid around his abdomen. I obviously googled and thought the worst. We were scanned every couple of weeks and eventually the fluid just disappeared. They told m it could have been due to an infection that I'd contracted whilst pregnant but they were never able to find a cause. It was 'just one of those things'. So stressful at the time, though.

How are things going with you and your baby?

Hello! Thanks so much for your message. We had the nip test done and it came back low risk. So at the moment things are just ticking along. I'm nearly 30 weeks now and have a scan soon to keep checking for growth. I'm nervous about what they'll find this time. But fingers crossed. Sometimes I wonder if it's worth all the tests....but it's best to keep on top of things I suppose!

Hello both I know this is an older thread but wondered how you were getting on @AliceBarefoot @GeriAtric
I just had a 16 week and found borderline increased fluid around the heart so I’ve got to have tests this week for infection.
I am so worried as I had to have a tmfr a year and a half ago for a heart defect and just feel like history is repeating itself even though it’s not the same problem we had before.

I hope things are going well for you both

Hi Bellasblankexpression, I'm sorry you're going through a hard time. Your situation sounds similar to mine and I remember how worrying and stressful it was. My tests for infection all came back negative, so I never found out why there was excess fluid. They kept a close eye on me and it somehow sorted itself.

If I can give you any advice it would be not to Google. I spent a lot of time googling and it massively increased my stress levels.

I hope you have some positive news at your next appointment. Do come back and let us know if you're able to.

I'm sorry you're going through this too. For us the fluid was never explained. We had tests for downs and it came back okay. I did have an infection at one point but there was no telling how long ago. My uncle (who is a scientist) explained that fluid around the heart is generally benign. Sometimes it can be to do with heart murmurs. It can be to do with the mother being over worked. Tired etc. Have you found out any more since posting last?
