Nuchal measurement 3mm at 10 weeks - too early?

Hello, I went for a private scan at 10 weeks due to two previous miscarriages and everything was ok with the baby. 4 limbs, and a heartbeat but towards the end she said, "I feel i ought to mention that the NT fluid is a little on the high side at 3mm". She said its still within normal range, but maybe too high for 10 weeks.

I'm now freaking out about it and have read a mixture of stuff on the internet. Like some saying its too early to measure and that's why they do it from 11-13 weeks, and other reports saying the fluid increases as baby grows, in which case it might be a lot bigger by the time i get to my 12 week scan. Does anyone have any experience of this, have i any hope? I'm 39 and this will be my 3rd baby,
Thank you.

I waited only 4 days. They did give me a number to call though if I needed to chase it up. Are you still waiting on yours? I have heard though that if it’s bad news you’ll hear quickly, so maybe for you no news is good news?

Excellent news NoCats! Time to start enjoying your pregnancy 😃

AggyB26 · 19/05/2018 18:33

Thank you 😊

In my experience if it's bad news they phone you pretty quickly (I had my scan on a Tuesday and got the call on the following Monday). If they are sending a letter at two weeks or later it's most likely good news.

Aww I hope you right 🤞🏻Just not knowing is awful 🙈 I hope everything is okey with your baby 👶🏼 😇

My now nine month old is currently asleep in his room, and he's absolutely fine, I should have said that before!

After 2 weeks waiting got my blood results back , and they high risk 1:25 for downs sindrom ☹️
They checked baby on scan today and heart beat is perfect, can’t see anything wrong
So I have done Amnio test, waiting for results , hopefully good results 🤞🏻

NinaMarieP · 24/05/2018 16:35

Mine were 1:34 and I had a CVS. I hope your results come back clear like mine did.

AggyB26 · 24/05/2018 16:51

Thank you hopefully they come back clear 🤞🏻

NoCatsHere · 25/05/2018 13:42

Oh aggy i can't believe you had to wait so long for those results. Glad you've had amnio so quickly now though, fingers crossed for you all will be well with those results. Thinking of you.

Hi there @NoCatsHere I have just experienced this exact same problem, went for reassurance scan at 10 weeks and all its done is made me horrendously anxious as I'm expecting twins and one of them had higher NT level than the other. I'm pleased you got a positive outcome. I'm waiting anxiously for my 12 week scan now to see if all will be OK. I wish I had never gone for a private scan and they really shouldn't do this to people. 🙄

Emphug · 08/01/2026 17:10

@TEAWITHME hi, ive just seen you had one twin with increased NT at 10 weeks. I had a 10 week scan with MCDA twin, one with fluid measuring 3.5mm unknown at the moment whether its a cystic hygroma. What was your outcome?
both are measuring very similar and bang on date which has confused me

TEAWITHME · 09/01/2026 19:53

Hi there @Emphug sorry it took a while to get back. So uk guidance says not to take the NT measurements until 12-13 weeks due to inaccurate results as that particular fluid is still reducing at that point.. by the time the 12 week scan came around twin 2 was no longer in the concern zone at all for NT measurements. However sadly for unexplained reasons I ran into issues at 21 weeks delivering twins at 23+1. Our miracle twin 1 survived and has no lasting effects of being born so incredibly prem..we still dont know how. We lost twin 2 💔
