Hi everyone,

I just got my test results and I got 1 in 2158 for the Down’s syndrome test, even though the letter stated I am low risk to me that number seems really low considering you can get a result out of 100,000.

I had my first son 10 years ago and I remember getting 1 in 100,000 back then, however I was 17 at the time.

Should I be worried, every little thing is scaring me in the pregnancy as took so long to conceive.

They will factor your age into that calculation I think. So your risk is about 0.0002% if that puts it into perspective. 99.9998% chance of your child not having downs. As you are older te age factor alters the figures. Its not based just on the nuchal iirc xx

If you had 2518 babies then one might have Down's syndrome.

Hi OP. That’s low risk so please try not to worry. I understand though, I am a natural worrier myself.

If you are concerned, you could look into getting the private Harmony test. This gave me an even lower risk than the nhs test. It was expensive though.

That’s really a very low risk. Every trust is different but in mine you’re only considered high risk if your result is higher than 1 in 150.

Mine came back as 1 in 34. Luckily he was not that one.

Even at 1 in 100,000 you could be that 1 so to me whether or not it’s 2,000 or 100,000 it’s a ‘risk’ but it’s so small I wouldn’t waste time worrying (easier said than done.)

I like the analogy of having a ball pit with 2,158 balls in it. Blindfolded you pick out a ball. Only one is white; the rest are black. What is the likelihood you would have picked up the white one?

Hiya. Congratulations on your pregnancy! Try not to worry too much. Your chance is considered low. But i would like to reassure you that even if you had a positive diagnosis of down syndrome its really not the end of the world. My first pregnancy (28 at the time) gave me a 1 in 99 chance. We had a non invasive test which confirmed our baby had down syndrome. I won't lie I was beside myself as I thought people with down syndrome didn't have a high quality of life. I quickly joined some groups, met families who had children with down syndrome, followed a blog called don't be sorry, called the down syndrome association and soon discovered I had a very out dated view of what down syndrome is. I had my very perfect, healthy baby girl in January 2016. She is super, cheeky, funny, so happy and the terrible 2's are kicking in lol. I know young adults with down syndrome who live independently, have jobs, contribute to society and who are loved so much. People with down syndrome can achieve so much and it's definitely not a life of doom and gloom as I first assumed it would be. Infact it's the polar opposite. Our live is full of happiness, joy, lots of laughs and so much love. There is a wonderful Facebook page and website called positive about down syndrome. It has stories of families with a child who has down syndrome. It isn't sugar coating life as there can be tough times but it gives information to help women and partners going through the worries you yourself are having. It helps people to make an informed decision what ever that decision may be. Try to enjoy your pregnancy and congratulations again! Xx

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Try not to worry! Firstly having a child with Downs Syndrome is not something to be feared - check out www.positiveaboutdownsyndrome.co.uk for inspiring stories written by Parents who explain what it is really like to love a child with Downs Syndrome. The media and medical profession often dwell too much on health issues and not the lived perspective. If you had a baby with DS believe me you would love him/her beyond measure and your heart would burst with pride just like for any child. Secondly over 90% of disability is acquired during life. If you worry about everything you will not be free to just enjoy this little one. Don’t waste your money on a Harmony or NIPT test - they are not 100% accurate and the lower the chance the less reliable the test. Scans are just tools and not definitive - please just try and enjoy being pregnant!
