Scan didn't go well- hand hold needed :(

We had our 12 week scan today and the baby has shown abnormalities.

The nuchal translucenc came back high at 4.1mm the baby also had fluid on the lungs. These could be unrelated they are not sure.

We are booked for the amniocentesis on Monday.

Anyone whose been through this your advice would be greatly appreciated.

I had a high risk result from the nuchal fold scan and chose to have a CVS (I think it was called?)

What did the 4.1mm translate into as risk? I think mine was 1 in 200.

We didn't get a 1 in anything chance. I think the cvs is a similar or the same thing we are booked in for.

Hi, I am so sorry you're going through this. I've been here twice, last year everything on my scan looked ok but had a high risk result from bloods and had an amnio (I was over 15 weeks so they opted for that rather than cvs) The amnio procedure itself was not as bad as I had feared, minimal discomfort, although I know this varies person to person and may be different for cvs. I made sure I rested the rest of the day and had a quiet day the following day, too. This year I've had a high NT reading (between 3.5 and 3.6 mm) but as I had already had the Harmony blood test come back low risk the consultant recommended we see what shows at the detailed scan, which I have next week. I also do not have a risk factor, as I didn't have the NHS screening blood tests this time. The waiting and not knowing is horrible.

My nuchal scan showed 1/30 chance for Down's Syndrome. . I went to another hospital for a second opinion and scan showed low risk. Dd was fine.

I'm so sorry, it's a dreadful shock when that happens. I was in your position two weeks ago. Nuchal measurement of 4mm. Our baby was also measuring a week behind though and my Papp A and BHcG levels were extremely low.

I was referred for an urgent CVS, which they couldn't do as the placenta was very posterior, but several further problems showed up on a more detailed scan which led the consultant to suspect Edwards syndrome.

Unfortunately my story has not ended happily, our baby's hb was found to have stopped a few days ago, and I had an ERPC today. I really hope that you have better luck, I will be keeping you in my thoughts.

I think it would be useful to be given a 1 in whatever risk, but if you're going for cvs anyway, I guess it's irrelevant.

The procedure was ok, the anaesthetic was a bit uncomfortable, but I didn't feel anything after that.

Fingers crossed that you get a good result, I'm sure the chances are you will. It's a terribly worrying time for you, try to keep as busy as you can and look after yourself.

What a worrying time for you. A friend of mine had a similar experience a few years back, she was told there was a problem with the nuchal fold and that there was a v. high chance of Downs Syndrome, she had further tests and all turned out well, no problems at all and her "baby" is now a healthy 14 year old. I was also told with my first baby at the 20week scan it was likely he would need an op at soon as he was born due something they detected with his kidneys, had another ultrasound at 32weeks and it was fine and had corrected itself as he developed. We had a 4.2mm NT and all turned out fine but at 34 my risk was a 1:5. Be prepared for that number but also be aware that there are mostly good outcomes out there with the same number. We went for NIFTY that evening and all came back ok.

Handholding @LonelyCooler , I'm in a similar position. I went for my dating scan on 26th April when I thought I was 12 weeks but turned out to be 10+6. They said that the NT measurement was twice what it should be although didn't tell me the measurement. Because of the gestation then the big hospital nearby with an FMU wouldn't accept a referral as they would have been unable to do tests at that stage. We were on holiday this past week so I have to go back for another scan on Tuesday to then be referred and hopefully seen at the FMU by the end of the week for a CVS.

Even if my CVS is clear, it seems likely from what I've been told that there is a problem which is either chromosomal or heart related (which could encompass a wide range of things).

Such a horrible shock at the scan but I'm coming to terms with the situation. The worst part at the moment is the feeling of being in limbo.

I hope things go as well as they can do on Monday. Sending strength for whatever it brings.

I really hope everything is ok Hun. I had a higher NT when I was pregnant with my daughter. I was 27 so it was a worry but I had a second private scan and whilst it was still high everything else looked ok. But then at 20 wk scan they couldn't see a nasal bone so I shot into high risk for downs. Had an amino and 9 days of hell waiting for the results - to be told everything was ok! During my wait I googled all sorts - so my advice is steer clear from the internet. Mine is a positive story and I very much hope yours is too. Take it super easy after your amnio and try and distract yourself (easier said than done I know). We bought a Nintendo wii at the time. Anyway my daughter is now nearly 9. Do let us know xx

Yeah we have both decided not to google any more. Just going to wait until the morning and see what happens.
We are both 28 so it's definetly a worry as by what we have read it's more likely know older parents.

It's good to know there have been positive outcomes too!!

It's a horrible wait. I have endured it twice. Once our nuchal measurement and bloods lead to a 1:60 risk (I was 28) and in my next pregnancy (aged 32) it was 1:10. Both times the babies turned out to be fine. I hope you get a similar resolution as me. There is a great charity called ARC (Antenatal Results and Choices) which has a helpline which can talk you through the different tests and results. I'd highly recommend them.

Hi OP, I hope your CVS went well. If your baby does have Downs, the Down Syndrome Association will be able to put you in touch with families in your area who can tell you what life with Downs is really like. The ARC is no good for that.

We had the CVS on Monday and it went well, we got the results on Wednesday and everything was fine no cromosome issues.

They also told us the fluid in the lungs had gone. Still got many more tests and appointments booked but for now this is the best news we could have hoped for.

Plus we found out we are having a little boy :)

Wonderful news op! One of my twins had a 6.1mm nuchal measurement at the 12 week scan and we were given a 1:14 high risk for those syndromes. Had a NIPT done which came back as 1:1,000,000 low risk and then a later amnio for other reasons which was also normal. My twins are now 18 weeks and perfect!
