Echogenic area (mass) in stomach at 20 wk scan - any experience?

Basically what the title says. Had my 20 week scan at 20+5 on Thursday and the sonographer saw an echogenic area (which I believe means mass in sonographer talk) in baby's tummy. She asked for a 2nd opinion as not seen one before and the other sonographer said that she had seen it once 'but not as big', they then asked head sonographer for advice and she wants to rescan in a week. I'm trying to be sensible and not panic and I even decided to only read peer reviewed articles on the subject (which was a huge mistake) but having really only seen bad things I thought I'd see whether anyone had any real life experiences, I've seen a few threads where people ask but never update so I don't know whether or not they turned out to be good news or bad news.

I'm sorry, I don't have direct experience of this issue, I do have experience of bad/worrying news after a scan so I sympathise.

You are doing the right thing staying away from dr google.

Can I suggest the charity arc. The specialise in antenatal diagnoses and should be able to give you some more information and possibly find you someone who has been in your situation (if your baby's issue isn't too rare, I think they struggle to find volunteer supporters for all diagnoses)

Your hospital should also have a screening midwife who can be someone to just chat your worries through with. It's hard to talk about these medical things with people in rl sometimes as they just don't get all the medical stuff.

We had this with our son who's now 2. He was rescanned every week and we had tests for various conditions until 30 weeks -ish when the consultant decided it was his gall bladder which was slightly enlarged. He was also rescanned just to make sure when he was about a month old. He is fine. It can be hard for them to pick up detail on the 20 week scan and they are being super cautious. I'm not going to tell you not to worry, as you will - those 10 weeks we're so stressful for us, but it may not be a sign of anything serious.

As an update, we went back for re-scan today, we had a different sonographer who was visibly perplexed when she read the referral form but quickly found the area again. She was equally none the wiser and said that she had been scanning over 20 years. She seems to think the 'thing' stretched from one side of stomach to the other. She spoke to a midwife who has now referred us to foetal medicine. The midwife couldn't offer any suggestions as to what it may be either although she thinks that as it in in the stomach rather than then gut CF and CMV can be ruled out which was a relief but I will rest easier when we know for certain. One thing that they both touched on is that improvements in technology means that we are seeing more and because I am very slim I apparently scan well so it could be something 'normal' but is only now becoming apparent with more advanced scanners. I will keep my fingers crossed for that outcome and will post again when we have more answers in case someone else searches for this in the future.

Final update for future googlers. Went to fetal medicine yesterday and the consultant is pretty convinced that it is either a blood clot that baby has ingested from an undiagnosed bleed in early pregnancy or a lump of vermix. So all is well and we have been discharged :)
