Increased NT measurement at 13 wks - really worried...

Hi there,
I know nobody can give me conclusive answers, but I'm so worried and I just wondered if anyone is/has been going through the same thing...

Basically at my 13 week scan last week it showed an increased NT of 3.2mm (although I'm sure I saw one of his measurements as 3.6mm and I'm sure they're supposed to take the highest measurement...). Anyway, so that combined with my bloods (which were apparently ok) and my age (34 at term) gave us a 1:241 chance of Down's. According to them this is "low risk" but I really think it's pretty high risk. So I had the NIPT blood test which can apparently tell to 98% accuracy whether it is "highly unlikely" that there's a chromosomal abnormality or "highly probable".

I'm waiting for those results to come back this week and my stomach is just doing somersaults. But apparently increased NT can also be a marker for heart or neural defects...

Has anyone else been in this situation and had a good outcome?? I'm so scared.

Thanks

Hi there, so sorry you are going through this. I had my 12 week scan earlier this year and had an NT measurement of 3.7 which combined with you bloods have me a 1 in 5 chance of the baby having a serious chromosomal abnormality so significantly higher risk than yours. I opted to have a CVS which came back all clear.

We have been told that the results may also mean that the baby has a heart condition and have been offered extra scans to monitor the growth. So far everything seems fine and we have no reason to believe that there is anything wrong with the baby.

The 2 week wait for your results will be a really testing time but try to relax as best as you can. I've got my fingers crossed for you!xx

These tests are really worrying aren't they? My sister was unable to have the combined test due to the position of the baby at the scan. She had the blood test a few weeks later and got a 'low risk' letter and thought nothing more! I had the NT and it was a little high at 2.7. Ill be almost 33 at delivery. I've spent a week worrying but heard nothing so I assume I'm low risk too. In our area we are not told a risk ratio in the letter I've found out although the midwife might discuss it at 16 week checkup. I'm not sure I even want to know at that stage! I don't think I'm going to go for further testing as it's so stressful

Oh, and don't worry about the higher measurement you saw. That also happened to me but the lady told me that she had to discard that measurement as the baby was not in the correct position. The baby must be lying down with a relaxed neck and nose pointing straight up. If the neck is turned, stretched or bent at all it can make a huge difference to the measurement so they don't use it. I had two measurements of 2.7 and one of 3.4. They used 2.7.

Thanks September, that's really sweet of you. And your story is definitely reassuring. They've also booked me a cardio scan at 20 weeks - is that what you had? How far along are you now?

Thanks Serafinaaa, they definitely are worrying! I called up to see if my results were back today but they're not - I jump out of my skin every time the phone rings! Maybe it's better not to know a risk number after all... So I think you might be about the same no of weeks as me if you haven't had your 16 week appt yet? I'm 14+2.

I'm 14+4 Smile due 14.2.15

I'm 21 weeks now and had the cardio scan last week. Everything was fine and it wasn't quite as scary as I had imagined. Took about 30 minutes and the sonographer talked us through everything, she started with the heart first.

I know exactly how you feel with the phone! We missed the first call from the hospital late one afternoon and had to wait until the next day to speak to someone. Longest night of my life!Sad I really feel for you and hope your results come back promptly!x

How funny Serafinaaa, we're almost due date twins! Just 2 days apart.

September - really glad your cardio scan went well. That must be such a relief!! Now you've got that out of the way you can enjoy the rest of your pregnancy :)

My phone is literally glued to my hand... but no call today. Confused Hopefully tomorrow... eek!

Good luck with both of your pregnancies x

Hi I just wanted to respond quickly. I had a 3.1 mm reading at 12 weeks and on that alone had a risk of 1 in 46 at 29years old. I had harmony which came back low risk and they offered an extra cardio scan at 20 weeks. We had this yesterday and it came back all clear so it can definitely come back positive for you. Wishing you lots of luck - I know exactly how much you are worrying xx

Hi trying - thanks so much for your post. That's really nice to hear - and so glad for you that all is well with your baby! Got a feeling that I'll get a call today so very jittery but your story has calmed me slightly..! x

Rach- It's nice to find someone with a close due date. I don't know anyone in 'real life' yet!

I know the feeling of waiting for the phone. I carried mine in my pocket for a week but didn't get a call. Just waiting for the letter now which should say low risk. I won't know a ratio though, just that it's lower risk that 1:150. Think I've decided against any further testing unless something comes up at the 20 week scan.

MissRainbowBrite · 28/08/2014 22:00

Just wanted to quickly add a bit of reassurance if I can. You were me almost exactly 3 years ago, I had a NT of 3.6mm which is just on the cusp of being "too high", I opted for a CVS which came back all clear and DD is now a gorgeous toddler.
Hope all went well for you both.

Jennifer153323 · 12/01/2021 22:18

Hiya, I'm sorry I know I'm years later but I'm going through the same thing. Was your baby ok? I'm very worried about heart problems x

Sixpencefaux · 13/01/2021 22:12

Hi all - currently 31 weeks. We had an NT measurement at 13 weeks of 3.2. Risk for downs came back as 1:166. I had a NIPT which came back as 1 in tens of millions so extremely low risk. 20 week scan was all fine and growth seems fine as I have had a couple of growth scans due to reduced movements. So far so good but it is in the back of my mind.

Jennifer153323 · 13/01/2021 23:01

I just had exactly the same measurement at 13 weeks and I'm terrified. I have decided to go for the NIPT test if I have anything greater than 1:300 or so. That's very reassuring to hear your pregnancy is going ok. Xx
