Amniocentesis today

On Wednesday I had a scan at 27 weeks and told my baby is very small( below 5th centile) I was referred to fetal medicine who told me that this could mean a few different things, placental deficiency although it looks fine at present, he could just be small or could have a chromosomal problem. They quoted 10% probability of this and I had an amino today and am obviously worried sick. Am trying to stay positive but naturally thinking the worst. Structurally the baby looked absolutely fine, just small though his head is closer to normal size. Not really sure what I'm asking- maybe just hoping anyone has had a similar experience that has ended well?

I know a few stories where women were told this categorically (that baby was too small for it to be anything good) & sometimes the baby wasn't even born small much less with any significant problems.

sorry you're going thru this. Did you find the amnio painful? (mine was).
Did they say you could expect results by Monday?

Thanks for the reply niger, yes it was painful and not straight forward as the needle nicked my placenta so fluid was bloodstained. Hoping for the results by Tuesday but they did say there may be a delay because of the blood. It's the waiting that I find so hard as I sure everyone does.

They couldn't get any rapid results because of the contamination from my blood. I have to wait two weeks to find out, by that time I'll be 30 weeks pregnant. I'm in hell.

First time it is unlikely they would be able to do anything for the baby before they are born if there is a problem so the delay although causes you more worry shouldn't be detrimental to the baby. Also your baby has a 90 percent chance of being perfectly fine .

A friend of mine was pregnant in similar circumstances last year. The baby was very small and at first they suspected dwarfism or similar. In the end my friend developed pre-eclampsia and had an emergency c-section at 33 weeks. The only issue seems to have been the size of the baby, probably based on poor nutrition from the placenta. There have been no other problems. She is now a beautiful 6-month old who is doing wonderfully. I really hope you get a happy ending too. Big hugs for how difficult this all is.
