Spina bifida at 19 weeks scan

I had a scan yesterday which showed my baby has something wrong with the bottom of his spine.

The sonographer seemed sure its spina bifida but i can't be seen my a doctor/fetal specialist until Monday.

Does anyone know of cases where a second scan has shown something different? She seemed sure my scan on Monday would show the same thing.

Also I am almost 20 weeks and if I do need to go ahead with a termination id prefer a medical one as I'm not keen on anything causing potential damage to the cervix. Does anyone know if its possible over 20 weeks

I'm really sorry to hear this. I had my 20 week scan on a Friday afternoon and was really worried about having to wait the whole weekend if there was a problem. I don't have any experience of this so I can't reassure you but I know that my mum was told that I had spina bifida (scans 36 years ago werent as good though). I really hope this is a false alarm for you.

Sorry to hear this - I hope you hear better news next week but it would be unusual for the sonographer to be so definite about it unless there were clear signs. a friend of mine had a baby with spina bifida which was picked up very late but it was on the basis of both spinal changes and 'soft' markers on US. They were then referred to a fetal medicine unit for more detailed scans by a specialist. They were given very clear information about the likelihood of disabilities and what surgery would be necessary before making their decision. It is worth looking at more info about spina bifida as medicine has advanced and sufferers have a better life than in the past, and the condition can vary hugely in severity.

Isn't spina bifida fairly fixable anyway? (I know there are degrees of severity though)

Good luck, OP. Hope you get a better outcome than you're fearing. When I had my last baby the only diagnostic offered was amnio, I didn't get the result until around 20 weeks, & I was very concerned that it would be something requiring intervention so I know how you feel

You must be feeling terrible OP. Dn was found to have SB at birth and had an op to close the hole in her spine at around 8 weeks. She has had no ill effects at all and met all her milestones without any delays. Op can also be done invetro (sp?) but dn problem was never picked up in scans.
