NT scan - quick question

I've got my NT scan on Wednesday with the combined bloods.

1. do they do the scan or bloods first??
2. do I need a full bladder for the scan?? I did when I had the scan for my son but it told me to on my appointment letter and it says nothing this time

Depends on where you go! I've had scans where they've taken the blood first and sometimes after. I suspect they usually do it after as they like to check viability first.

You almost certainly won't need a full bladder, but I wouldn't do a wee just before all the same! For starters, sometimes they need to get baby to shift position and emptying the bladder can encourage that.

Mine was scan first then bloods. I was told to go with a full bladder HTH!

Please fill your bladder! It is easier to nip for a wee if it's too full than to sit and fill your bladder up.
They should do bloods second. They won't know for definite fetal age or viability until you've been scanned.

My scan letter said I didn't need a full bladder, but guess it may vary depending on your hospital. I did have to jiggle about a bit to try and get the baby to move though. Even so she only managed to get one NT measurement. I had the scan first and bloods after. Got the results within a week.

Hi Mrs Giraffe, I'm a midwife sonographer just popping in to say that a full bladder will definitely make the scan a lot easier to do as it pushes the baby up out of the pelvis and makes the images clearer too. Good luck, hope it all goes well
