NT scan

I heard from the hospital today that our dating scan is booked for 18th Feb. Pg will be 14+3 so too late for NT. I am in my late 30s.

Would you just run with that and wait until the anomaly scan or would you book a private NT scan? We're in Perthshire, Scotland. I have googled and there seem to be 2 private clinics in Edinburgh that do NT.

Is it worth talking to the GP to see if the date could be moved?

I would stress that you want the NT test and appt needs to be pushed up. If they wont, I'd book a private scan. I only say this because I'm 34, went to my scan and was given 1:38 odds for DS which was startling. NHS was able to offer me their equivalent of the Harmony test (NIPT) which has a 2 week results wait and scheduled an amnio to confirm a positive result if that's the case.

Push it.. if there is in any way any chance for them to fit you in, they'll find it. It is so time critical!

There are lots of benefits to the NT screening - not just to find out the risk of chromosomal abnormalities (the big one) but also some findings can be indicative of later issues that they can keep an eye on. A thickened nuchal can also potentially mean heart issues even without chromosomal problems so they'd know to refer you for a fetal echo. Similarly low PAPP-A or high bHCG with the blood test can mean later growth issues, so they can refer you for a third trimester growth scan. I had both this time out so I got the fetal echo and the growth scans.

The latest an NT scan should be done is 13+6. After that the measurements for the Nuchal fold don't tell them much.

Call and query the date in the morning...

its worth checking that your nhs trust definitely offer the NT scan. I had just assumed that mine did, but it didn't. I booked a private NT scan that I had yesterday. I got the NT measurement while I was there and the blood results today. all is well and I am so glad that I got it done.

if your trust do offer the NT then definitely push for it, but I would say if you can afford it, its worth going private to put your mind at ease.

I'm in Scotland and NHS Scotland offer NT scans. I had one last time with DD. Who do I speak to? MW? Hospital? GP?

My scan date came through for my 16th week of pregnancy. I phoned the antenatal department at my local hospital and they got me in the same week. I did not bother contacting my midwife I just let her know when the scan and NT had been done.

In England I'd ring the antenatal department at the hospital too, or possibly the ultrasound department but I don't think there is much they can do without a referral. At least the antenatal department at the hospital is on-site unlike a community midwife.
