Worrying early scan...

I don't want to google the possibilities as I'm positive it will scare me so I'm wondering if anyone here can help.
I went for a private early scan. Thought I was 6 +2. Measured as 5 +2, so this is why nothing confirmed yet. Anyway, the scan revealed a lovely, well positioned pregnancy sac with everything looking like it should - except couldn't see anything in the sac. Apparently, it's not the end of hope yet but I'd like to prepare for the worst. Does anyone know what will happen if they find nothing in my next scan? Will I have to have some kind of procedure to remove the empty sac?

Anyone?

I just googled on your behalf as I didn't want to read and run but have no actual experience of this. Apparently 5 weeks is too early to pick up a heartbeat on a scan. Heart beats become visible at around 7 weeks. Hope this helps x

Congratulations on your pregnancy. Sorry to hear you're experiencing a stressful time with scans. Wait, follow doctors' instructions, did they give you a return date? Sadly only 1/4 pregnancies are successful but this may not apply to you yet. Take care of yourself, rest and good luck at your next appointment.

It wasn't that there was no heartbeat. She couldn't see anything in the sac Hmm

DoctorDonna - try not to worry. Six weeks is very early and almost exactly the same thing happened to me with my DS. I went back a week later and there he was, measuring 7 weeks, even though I'd been told he couldn't be more than 5 at the first scan (I knew this couldn't be the case because of when I'd tested.)

He's now 5 years old and gorgeous (still giving me frights mind you) and I've moved on to panicking about his younger sibling...

At 5+2 you may well not see anything in the sac. The sac needs to be a certain size (at least a few days above 5+2) with nothing in it, before they start talking about blighted ovums. Sometimes the yolk sac can be seen at 5+2, but not always - it's a really really borderline time and even a few hours could make a difference. 5+4 and nothing I would be a little more concerned but still not out, but really at 5+2 it's not a bad sign at all.

Also sometimes with a tilted uterus the contents of the sac can be hidden even if you can see the sac. I am no sonographer so I can't fathom how that is, but it is what I have heard. Too many women I know have been told the sac is empty at over 6 weeks, then a rescan at 7 weeks shows a baby with a heartbeat measuring perfectly. Weird, but it's the truth!

Good luck and keep us updated after Friday!

Thank you for the reassurance. It's going to be a tough day. I've managed to get two hours off from work but will need to go back in as Friday is a full teaching day with mainly exam classes! Confused

If it helps, our Trusts early pregnancy clinic won't even attempt a scan before 6+2 as it is unlikely we can see anything before then.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 02/12/2013 19:24

That does help. Still preparing for worst though. Going to be a long week until Friday.

So scan is today. I'll know in a couple of hours what the outcome is. Heartbroken already.

Hope it goes ok x

There is now a clearly visible yolk sac. So there has been progress going by previous report. Not enough to say definitely viable as could have just been a rubbish sonographer at the private scan. So, back I go next Thursday. I feel much better though as I know what will happen in the worst case scenario and everyone at the EPU was absolutely lovely. Has helped me feel all zen about the whole thing.
