i ask because i got a 1 in 100,000 after the combined test at 12 weeks. however, now, in the 3rd trimester i'll be having an amnio because of findings on late ultrasounds putting my risk at 1 in 3.

The screening test at 12 weeks doesn't exactly give a negative or a positive, as it can't give a definite answer only a risk rating. A risk rating of 1 in 100,000 is very low but it's not an absolute negative - by definition it means 1 person in 100,000 with those results would turn out to have a baby with Down's syndrome. hopefully you will not be that 1 in 100,000.

I'm so sorry to hear you have had worrying findings at your later scans. The amnio will give you a definite answer and there is still a 2/3 chance you will be all clear. best of luck.

Hi the prev poster explains it well - sometimes even the 1-10.000 may well be the one. I got 1-330 and I was the one - my age made the risk better than it should have been as I was 22. I hope you get the all clear from the amnio. Fingers crossed.

Thanks for the responses - yes, I appreciate that it's not a diagnostic test but a statistical likelihood. I was using the terminology that the hospital have been using with me - false negative and false positive screens. I was just looking for other experiences of people given big numbers but being that "1". Thanks again, I'm finding it very difficult. I am older, so was very surprised at my result so I was also wondering if they'd made a mistake with the odds.

Wish the hospital wouldn't use that terminology, it's seriously misleading and some people (not you) would misunderstand. How long do you have to wait till your amnio? If you have any choice, I think the sooner you can have it the better, the not knowing is so hard.

What a worry for you. Ive recently been through abnormal scans/high risk/cvs so I understand how worried you must be. In terms of the invasive testing, its not so bad. I didn't look and didn't feel a thing.
I really hope you get the outcome you want.

Wishing you well op. When is your amnio?

Hoojimiflip · 23/10/2013 14:16

My best NCT friend did at the same time I had DS. Her son was an absolute delight but it was as you've described. I hope all goes well.
