ladies who have terminated for medical reasons

Hi, for anyone who doesn't know, I terminated surgically on the 25th of July due to anencephaly. I have not bled properly for about a week, but still do occasionally after sex

I just wanted to ask a few questions; I and still getting faint positives on pregnancy tests, is that normal and how long for? I'm 4 weeks since the procedure on Thursday

Can I ovulate while still having faint positive pregnancy tests?

How long has it taken you to ovulate and have a period, and get a negative test if you have experience of this

I really appreciate any replies. Thank you xx

Ldt87, I'm not sure, but is there the possibility that the termination wasn't complete? This does happen sometimes I'm afraid to say. I got my period about six weeks after my termination. It was quite short, I think, and then things were back to normal.

Is there someone you can see about this? I know I was discharged with no follow-up arrangements made but I'm sure there was a number I could have rung if I had any abnormal bleeding etc.

I think I was still getting faint positives after 4 weeks although not certain. Think they went pretty soon after that though.

Think I bled for 2 weeks, and had a period 6 weeks after the terminations.

Like Ghislaine said, I reckon it might be worth ringing the hospital to ask them just in case.

No idea re the ovulation thing. Have you looked in the pregnancy loss board, I wonder if it's been mentioned on there. I know a lot of people over there seem to get pregnant before their period returns.

Do you think you may be ovulating, do you have signs? I guess I must have ovulated 4 weeks after the termination if my period came 6 weeks after.

Sorry for your loss, it's so hard isn't it. I am desperate to be pregnant again (but also so afraid it may happen again).

Good luck

Hi OP,

I terminated for anacephaly last December. I got my periods back at the end of February, so approximately 11 weeks. I bled for 5 weeks after the procedure though have ovulated and had my periods regularly since then. I'm pretty certain it's normal to have faint positives for up to 6 weeks afterwards.

Sorry for your loss xx

Thanks so much for replying, I am going to wait for the 5 week mark before calling the hospital, now my bleeding has stopped in will see if the positive tests stop. I don't feel concerned about an incomplete termination so ill give it another week or so. It's good to hear other people's experiences.

I really hope I get a period soon so I can move forward and try again. The positive tests really knock me down for a day or so each time

Thanks everyone, sorry you have all also had this to deal with xx

I don't have any signs of ovulation I just wondered if I could get a rough idea of general timings to get my head around my cycle again, but it seems to vary so wildly I'll just have to wait and see xx

I kept notes of this stuff - not sure why really but here it is. I had a medical termimation, btw.

The bleeding stopped after 13 days. I had what might've been EWCM (so possibly ovulation) for three days after that, but I can't be sure as I wasn't using OPKs.

A day later, 17 days after the termination, I had a positive HPT. I then didn't test for a few days, but on day 22 I had a negative HPT.

I got my period 32 days after the termination (longer and heavier than usual, but I'd read this can be the case) but my cycle went back to normal after that.

From extensive Googling, I think ovulation can normally be expected two to three weeks after termination. But also that hCG (the hormone that HPTs detect) can persist for up to four weeks.

Probably more detail than you really wanted!

I understand the feeling of wanting to be back to normal as soon as possible, but maybe stop testing for a week if it's upsetting you.

I hope you're recovering emotionally, as well as physically Flowers

Thanks lostlove, I think it seems to vary a lot. I just wasn't sure if ovulation is even possible if a pregnancy test is still showing positive. I just want a period now.

Now that lostlove has said it, I feel sure I had EWCM very soon after the bleeding stopped too even though the HPT was still positive.

Hopefully your period will return in the next couple of weeks. It was the first time in a long time that I had been pleased to see mine!

It's so crap how the HPT stays positive, I couldn't seem to stop myself POAs either, silly really.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I managed to stay away from POAS after my termination, although was equally obsessed with getting my period again. For me, it was about 4 weeks after my termination, although they were very light and very short-cycled for a while.

I had some acupuncture to sort my periods out - I think the shock threw them out of whack because it never happened before nor since.

Hopefully, it won't be long for you now.

FluffyDucky · 23/08/2013 10:20

Hi Ldt87, I hope you are doing as well as can be expected? My period re-started 5 weeks after our termination (exactly one week before follow up appt!) Not sure about POAS, I decided to stay away from doing that. I have just had my second period so think body is settling back down.
My understanding is though it can take quite a while, although it feels like forever not that long has passed since yours so your body probs still has hormones etc running through it. xxx
