failed amnio? repeat?

Hi
Long story shortened- antenatal care has been poor with test results not being actioned so at 18w i was sent for an amniocentesis after 2nd AFP blood test showed 1/55 risk for downs

Procedure failed yesterday after a few tries each with 2 needles, consultant said he couldnt see where the needle tip was so couldnt safely complete the amnio.

I am very over weight and one of my questions had been about my size and needles being long enough!
He thought the needle wasnt piercing my uterus, just going around it. To me it felt like it was- it was pretty painful!!

They are going to try and get echo tip needles and retry on friday

Has anyone experianced a failed amnio? And sucessfully had another? Or unsucessful-i need to be prepared :(

I read that a difficult to pierce uterus can b an indicator of downs..... Is this correct?

Should i just give up and not try again? I do feel like i need to know to prepare for the worst.
My heads all over the place :'( im scared to move/laugh for fear of bursting my insides with all the holes i feel there must be :(

Big Hugs curly. I have no experience of this, but didn't want to read and run. I hope someone will be along soon with something of more use to you. Flowers

Thanks rosalux, i know u have been put thru the wringer too

Well todays amnio was much better, wednesday was so traumatic but today was so much easier
The echo tip needle did its job on the first try this time :) it was amazing to see little one reaching for the tip, hope this is a good sign

Now the wait begins for results, cant change a thing regarding the outcome now so fingers crossed.

FX for you. Other people have described their LO's reaching for the needle too. It never occured to me. When do you get the results?

curlywurlyllass · 16/08/2013 19:05

It didn't happen the first amnio, but this time the needle went in in front of his/her body, easy grabbing distance! Think it did grab the needle, but pointy tip had been removed by then thankfully

Should b late monday/tues for first results then a long 2-3weeks for full results

Havnt felt much movement since this morning, hoping its just tired from its home invasion

How are you doing, curly?

Getting there toby, not brave enough to post on the january thread yet in case i jinx things !!

Went for the consultant appointment on 19th and was given a reassurance scan- heart was beating away :D
But ive not felt much since :( so petrified
Did get relieving results that evening, but waiting anxiously for full results and some definite kicks/movements would be comforting to feel

so scared of m/c risks. Had a mega hot night last night- hope it wasnt a sign of infection

trying to be patient for thursday (20week scan) and not run to the hospital to beg a midwife to listen for a heartbeat!

Oh, love. I'm sure your mw won't mind at all if you think you'd like her to listen to the baby's heartbeat to reassure you. I think you deserve to hear it after what you've been through Flowers

Would you like me to update the thread to let them know how you're doing? Everyone was asking after you. It's fine if you don't want to, though.

FX for you for Thursday :)

curlywurlyllass · 25/08/2013 22:44

Thanks again, yes please- really wanted to thank everyone but cant do more than read their lovely posts right now :)
Shall b back with my results in a week or 2
Fingers crossed!

Good luck with everything. We'll welcome you back with open arms when you come back to tell us everything's fine.

Verbally received the quick results 3days after the amnio- was good news.
11days after the amnio we got the call saying no trisomies! Still waiting on written details and having to chase them up.

im still petrified things will go wrong, but getting reassuring movements more often now (22w5d)

The reassurance scan i had just after the amnio i was sure i saw something between the legs..... Turns out i was right.... Team blue for us :D

For anyone reading this.... I hear it is quite rare for the normal needles not to work and to need to do the procedure again. The 2nd time it was so much easier, and It was amazing to see the echo tip needle sparkle!
Good luck if u find yourself in this situation and i hope it works out well for u
