Is it common to have no problems at the first scan, then something show up at the 20 week one?

I'm just trying to prepare I suppose, in case, there weren't any notable problems at the earlier scan apart from that the baby was really huge - they changed my dates by almost two weeks, which doesn't make any sense as I can't have conceived then.

So I'm worried that the baby might have something wrong with it, making it huge.
Also I am still feeling ill at nearly 20 weeks, and that makes me wonder if there's a reason - my downs risk was not high but borderline, and I know downs can cause high HCG.

I'm just generally a bit worried about what might be found, but I keep thinking, surely most things show up at the 12 week (which for me turned out to be 14+3 - couldn't even get a nuchal measurement, it was too late)

but how common is it for something to be missed then, and to be told something is wrong at the twenty week scan?

No experience of having been told there were problems but to reassure you that still feeling ill is not a bad sign. just horrid.

with my dd I was sick until 20 weeks and with ds i was still being sick up until her was born. Horrible but not totally uncommon:(

Oh and also my dd's dates were totally out - she could not POSSIBLY have been conceived when the dates they gave suggested.... and she just just huge when she was born.

A 12 weeks scan is really looking at the consistency of evidence for dating purposes, any anomalies in measurement and obvious problems (presence of nasal bone for example) whereas a later scan can look in more detail at the structure of organs and for any inconsistencies in development. Even then not all problems are detected at that stage. Remember the majority of pregnancies produce a normal baby.

I feel like everyone I see or speak to says, they feel Ok now, or they were ok by 17, 18 weeks, and as these milestones pass and it doesn't stop, I just despair - and imagine there must be some underlying reason.

I'm glad they got the dates wrong with you, as well - I suppose it must just happen sometimes.

LIZS, thankyou too - that's good to know, so I can be realistic, as I guess they could find things wrong this time around even though the first scan was Ok.

I'm trying to keep it in perspective iyswim so having the facts about what each scan is for, really helps. I think I understand now.

Nothing abnormal on my 12 or 20 week scan. My baby has downs syndrome. It is not a foolproof test, if you "need to know" you need an amino.

I suppose often people do not know until they give birth - I had a good friend who had no idea, either, and it was a big shock for her from which she didn't properly recover. It was a very sad situation.

I have two dcs with no health issues as far as I know, and I felt sick till around the start of the 3rd trimester (vomiting, but also generally unwell). I really don't think feeling unwell is a sign of any problems. It is hard not to worry, I know.

Please remember that the 12 and 20 week scans are looking at different things and many things aren't "missed" at the 12 week scan, they just aren't detectable yet. However, both scans are just screening tests - the will be false positives where the pregnancy is actually normal - and false negatives such as wips screening above.

It happened to me too - not Downs, something different. Most pregnancies go on to produce normal babies though so good luck.
