Hi, I'm 6 weeks pregnant and just got my letter through from the hospital for my first scan at 12 weeks. I'm not really clear - will they automatically screen for downs syndrome or am i meant to call now and request this, or make a separate appointment for this? Does anyone know? Thanks.

I'm suprised it doesn't say - is it referred to as the Nuchal Transluency scan? If so that does test for Downs and other syndromes.

It depends where you live. My area only does a nuchal scan with women over a certain age but some areas screen all.

The test often/mostly involves a measurement of the nuchal fold which i think is the area of liquid in the neck area. if the area measures over about 2.5/3mm then it is considered a bit more high risk for various things - not just downs. It could be a heart problem (major or minor) or a chromosonal abnormality and spina bifida I think.

To ascertain the risk they also look at your blood and combine the nuchal measurement with the levels of hormones in the blood. I only know this because of tests i have had so happy for anyone to correct me.

If they mention nuchal in your letter then you are having screening otherwise I'd give them a call if you want to make sure you get it.
