Fetal Kidney Problems

Hi I'm 21 weeks pregnant and during my 20 week scan it was noticed that the LO's right kidney was holding more fluid than normal but left kidney seemed ok. Today i went to see a consultant for a more detailed scan and it turns out that both LO's kidneys are now holding a lot of fluid and that there could be a possible obstruction on the tubes to the bladder. I'm awaiting a phone call from hospital 2moro to give me another appointment for a referral to Nottingham QMC for further investigation. Really unsure what to think or feel right now and not sure what will happen next, just wondering if anyone else has been through this before and can maybe give me some reassurance please. Thank you in advance

No direct experience though a friend of mine is having a similar problem with hers just now so I really feel for you.

Good luck for monday and don't be surprised if your feelings on the matter take a while to digest and come through. Are you going with someone else? Might be worth asking them to take notes so if you can't remember what was said afterwards you have something to refer to and go back later when you have space to take on board the information (whatever info that might be).

Thanks GinPalace, hospital has arranged transport for me and my dp to go to QMC so all i need to do is sort out childcare for ds. Dp is very good with remembering important info/advise given which is helpful for me as i dont need to try and remember everything i'm told there and then. I had a massive break-down on dp monday night after the hospital visits to maternity unit and to neurology clinic about seizures/blackouts. I got told on monday i'm been referred to Nottingham for pregnancy specialist and then referred to Sheffield for epilepsy specialist.

crumbs, sounds like you have your hands full. Whoever said this baby lark was easy eh! Good luck with it all. It is good they have arranged the transport, good old NHS. Hope you're keeping busy this weekend to take your mind of your monday appointment. :)

How did it go?

My DD had the same thing noted at my 20 week scan, i had lots of scans and the kidneys just got bigger. After she was born she had LOADS of tests (nuclear medicine, catheter tests, ultrasounds etc) and she was finally diagnosed with multicystic dysplastic kidney disease. She only has her left kidney and it is larger than it should be (hydronephrosis) and the ureter has problems aswell. She is looked after by a consultant at birmingham childrens hospital and our local hospital and takes preventative antibiotics every night.

She is fine, you wouldnt know she has any problems. She has scans, blood and urine tests every 3 months now but in the early days it seemed we were always in hospital. Her 1st birthday was last friday.

PM me if you want any info xx
