Nuchal scan of 2.3mm at 13 weeks and 4 days

When I left hospital on Thursday with a nuchal scan of 2.3mm and after having bloods taken, I was feeling quite positive.

Now I'm unsure.

I know I need to wait for the bloods to return to give me a risk ratio but is 2.3mm 'good' for my gestation (13 weeks and 4 days)? I've tried to search on the internet and some say 'fine', upper end but not a cause for concern whereas I've read women who are only a week behind in gestation and having a scan of about 1.7mm

I'm 32. Sonographer said she wasn't 'paying much attention' to the measurement?!? and the MW didn't say much either. I didn't ask how long the bloods take to come back (stupidly).

Scan was done at York, if this helps.

Upper end of normal limits is still normal.

Seems fine to me, but it's difficult to interpret the nuchal in isolation. You would probably expect it to be slightly high given that you are right at the end of the time window for the nuchal scan. Did the sonographer mention any other soft markers on the scan -- eg, was the nasal bone visible?

For the record, I had a scan of my twins at exactly 12 weeks. Twin 1 (normal) had a nuchal of 2.1 and twin 2 (diagnosed with Down's syndrome) had a nuchal of 2.0.

I should add that other markers were present in the twin with Down's syndrome (eg, absent nasal bone and tricuspid regurgitation).

hi there, sorry you're having this worry. i think the general concensus for various hospitals is that 'usually' anything under 3mm is considered low risk. however, like the previous poster said, the risk factor can only be assessed when all of the elements are taken into consideration (ie; nuchal measurement, bloods and of course your own unique circumstances such as age etc). it is of course difficult not to worry so i won't say that, but i would certainly give your hospital a call if you have any concerns - even to see how long the bloods will take so you're not waiting on tenterhooks. ARC (antenatal results and choices) are a fantastic source of information and support.
my last nuchal measurement back in march was 7.4mm so over double what is considered 'low risk' - my baby girl did turn out to have downs syndrome, along with heart problems and a cystic hygroma. but for your measurement i would expect there is a much much higher ratio of things turning out just fine.

Thank you for the advice. I thought too that 2.3mm was higher end but I had read that the further n, the 'bigger' it's likely to be. The sonographer did not mention ANYTHING regarding nasal bone. We had a good look at the face but considering I couldn't see the HB, even though I was reassured it was there, I doubt I would have been able to see it.

Hi mum2be79 I had a 2.2mm measurement at 13+3 wks. Even though I am age 40 with a background risk of about 1:100 the combined age+scan+blood results still came back with a much improved 1:900 low risk. So I think at 13+4 a measurement of 2.3mm is definitely normal.

Oh and my sonographer mentioned that it is also related to the crown to rump measurement (which kind of goes with genstation) in that they can do the nuchel fold test on babies with CTR measurements of between about 4 and 9 cm, and that a few extra mm in nuchel fold on a 4cm baby is much more significant than the same on a 9cm baby. So again the bigger the baby, the more "normal" higher nuchel fold measurements are.

I had a nuchal of 2.6mm at 12 weeks but my research showed that under 3 or 3.5mm is the usual cut off for concern. I went on to have dodgy blood test results too which gave me a very high risk of my second baby having down syndrome (big problem was one of the bloods) and I STILL got the all clear. My little boy is now 2 months old!

I wouldn't be concerned with 2.3mm at that gestation. Further, if a problem in the bloods pushed you to high risk you'd probably know about it by now - I got a call two days later.

How long did it take for results to come back? Mine were taken exactly a week ago and I've heard nothing. I'm 15 weeks on Sunday 10th July, so do i take it that means it could be fine as I thought bad news means it would come back sooner?

it depends....did you get told you would have the fast-track results? with my amnio (which was on a monday) we had the fast-track results back on the wednesday which confirmed T21. the full karyotype results didn't come back for another 2 weeks after that.
if you were told you WOULD have fast-track results (these are only for the main chromosomal abnormalities, T13, T21 and T18 i think) then i would tentatively say that you are ok.....as tomorrow is Friday i would be inclined to give them a ring and ask - it's the waiting that is horrible, and if you can find out before the weekend, that would be much better!

I was told 2-4 weeks by letter if low risk, within a week if high risk. I was phoned after two days to be told I was very high risk.

Good news. I got the letter yesterday (but I was out from 7am until 1am this morning so didn't get it until this morning!) saying it was a 1 in 25,000 chance. Pleased with that result.

i had my u/s done at 11 weeks 5 days and it came back that my baby had a nt of 2.3, now over 1 year later, i can confirm my son was diagnosed at birth with Down Syndrome.... i dont mean to scare you, but I think you should be aware that even though you may be determined low risk with bloods etc, it can happen.... It was a complete shock to my whole family but In hindsight I am very glad that i didn't know as my boy brings us soooo much joy regardless.... I know that if I had known earlier, i probably would have thought twice about going through with the pregnancy and for me this would have been the biggest mistake of my life, so like they say, ignorance is bliss and everything happens for a reason, while ds is a diagnosis it does not determine who my child will become. Goodluck and best wishes for a healthy child.

My NT was 2.9 at 13+6 but no soft markers and combined with bloods my risk was 1 in 10000. So at 2.3 and nothing else mentioned, I really wouldn't be worried at all.
