hi everyone, at a routine scan at 33 weeks me and my hubby have been told our little boy has a hole in his heart, stomach/bowl problems and he has down syndrome, im devastated, i'm over the initial shock, but i feel so sad and lost. now it's turned to worry about my little boy, i don't know anything about ds if i'm honest.

We have a son who has a different, very rare chromosomal condition but on many ways he is similar to a child with Down's syndrome although further behind with his physical milestones (as much as you can say a child with Down's syndrome, because that is sort of like saying 'a boy'- everyone is a product of parents genes and their environment before anything else that may define them). Our son brings us the most enormous joy- he is the sunniest, most affectionate, lovely boy and in some ways easier than his siblings. There are challenges for him and for us, of course, but all our fears about the responsibility and difficulty of having a child with significant problems were actually unfounded. It has taught us and his siblings how to be kinder, more tolerant people and has shown us what really matters in life. It's such a huge shock when you first find out news like this- I just wanted to run away and didn't think we'd cope. But you do and if you speak to other parents not medical professionals it will be a lot kinder on your emotions. So much luck and I hope things go well. Life can take unexpected and unwelcome turns but sometimes they are the best things to happen despite the awfulness you feel at the start. You will feel happy again and your life will end up very 'normal', just different to how you had planned it.

My DS who is 6 has 2 chromosome disorders, severe non verbal ASD, ADHD , severe global developmental delay and a really rare genetic disorder.
He was born at 29 weeks after I bled heavily from 5 weeks.
Yes things can be tough but he is absolutely delightful and his cheeky smile lights up the room.
My eldest has hemiplegia CP but is really easy to manage .
I had a medical induction in 2005 at 23 weeks due to serious heart defects that were not compatible with life. Absolutely the worst time of my life. Never far from my mind now.
So difficult. I am now 5 weeks after getting pregnant age 40 despite being sterilised in 2009!
I won't be having any invasive tests just scans , bloods etc.

My dd is 19 months and has ds. She had two holes in her heart at birth which were repaired via open heart surgery at 12 weeks.
Pregnancy was terrifying, stressful, horrible. But, 1 hug and i was in love. This child is amazing, wonderful, beautiful, clever, funny...
Weve had rough times, surgery was HARD, but shes worth every moment. Shes never had a days illness, sleeps all night, smiles all the time, and wants to love the world. Im sure the future holds downs as well as ups, butthats ok, we'll manage.
Dont write your little one off, and have faith in yourself.
KatherineBenny im going to send you a pm. X
