Do they tell you result straight away?

Hi everyone,

this is my first post :) I'm going for my nuchal fold/dating scan next week (1st pregnancy!) and have been wondering - do they tell you the thickness then and there, or do they tell you what's 'normal' and not so? or do you have to just wait by the phone for the 4 working days like it says in the leaflet?

I was told straight away about the measurement, then had to wait a few days for blood results which changed my risk factor significantly.

I had a good measurement then borederline result from bloods.
We decided on a detailed anomaly at 20 weeks with markers, as the consultant didnt think the risk was high enough for an amnio.
After the anomaly my risk was halved again so much better.
ds2 arrived in dramatic style but perfect just over a year ago

try not to worry and if you need help with advice on testing and results I can highly recommend ARC who were amazing, lots of mumsnetters have used them and they are brilliant

Yes, you usually get the NT measurement at the scan, and if the blood results are bad, you will get a call within a few days. At my hospital if the results are fine, you hear nothing until you get a letter a few weeks later.

I had the phone call two days later after a perfect NT measurement as my bloods were absolutely appalling. I'm 22 weeks now and opted out of invasive testing so aside from a clear ultrasound a few weeks ago, we still don't know for sure.

On the plus side, bad bloodwork does seem to have a higher rate of false positives than a high NT measurement. I haven't often read of people with regular NTs actually getting positive diagnosis, but high NTs seem to have more positive diagnosis, so you can be reasonably reassured with a good NT.

With my first pregnancy I had a private nuchal scan and they told me the measurement there and then and I got the full results (good results) telephoned to me the next day. However, that was private...

With my NHS nuchal with this pregnancy, I don't think they were going to tell me the actual nuchal fold measurement beyond it was in normal range (but I could see the measurement on the screen anyway when they were doing it, it was in the top right hand corner!).

If combined with the bloods I was low risk, I was told I'd get a letter within 4 weeks, but a phone call within a week if I was high risk. As it was I got a phone call 2 days later telling me I was very high risk (all turned out ok).

Thanks Claire :) Lots of people seem to say they get high risk results but then it all turns out ok - maybe it was best when we couldn't do these types of tests - less worry! :)
