Wobbly and confused

Just got results of nuchal scan and bloods today. Not good. High risk. Couldn't see nasal bone. But only 11+2. Have asked for a cvs but DH thinks we should have the nasal bone measured again next week. If this had been present the risk would decrease to 1:2000. Thing is, every week/day that goes by means I will be less likely to end things. Can have cvs in a few days....What to do for the best???

No advice, but wondered how you were feeling after having slept on it?

I would say only go for a CVS if you need to know or would act if it came back positive.

Feel really flat and exhausted. Have option of cvs this week or next. We think that we would act on it, as long as it's soon. So I can have cvs this week, or wait another week after another scan. I don't really have a feel for how risky cvs is. All I know is that it is a lot less risky than my current chance of DS....

well how about you find out the following:

1. how likely is a nasal bone to appear next week and what will that do to your risk factor next week.

1. when is the latest you can have a surgical termination (if that is your reason for acting sooner rather than later)

1. Ask the consultant who would be doing your CVS what their risk stats are on CVS and miscarriage and whether you are clinically a straight forward case for it or not (position of placenta etc).

I was told the the risk for CVS was 1 in 100 babies miscarry.

screening causes lots of anxiety doesn't it :(

I'm not sure if it will help you, but in my area, they no longer use the nasal bone as part of the calculation of risk factor as it is so unreliable. Quite a few babies with Downs syndrome don't have one, but quite a few babies without Downs syndrome don't have one either. My baby with definite Downs syndrome had a perfectly good nasal bone at 12 weeks but with a very large nuchal fold (4.5mm) and characteristic blood results. That's the best indicator at this stage. A friend of mine in London had similar to you - risk of Downs because they couldn't see the bone was about 1/100, but if they hadn't taken it into account then it would actually have been more like 1/10000. She waited for a 16 week scan where they check other soft markers (nasal bone irrelevant by this point - all babies get one eventually) and they were clear so risk went right down. Just to muddy the water a bit more, the statistics for CVS risk are rather old now and technology (and skill) has improved. I'd also recommend you speak to your consultant and hopefully they will have some more specific words of wisdom for you. Good luck and please try to stay as calm as you can - I know that's easy to say, I remember very well how tough those few days of decision making were.

I have spoken to the consultant who strongly encouraged another nasal bone scan. But have cvs booked for early next week, just in case.

My current risk is 1:77 which I know isn't as worrying as some others have had, but the impact has been exhausting. Really appreciate everyone who has taken the time to respond. Fingers crossed, things might be a bit clearer in a few days.
