High Nuchal fold - CVS on friday - Help

Evening,

I'm in a bit of a daze at present and could really do with any information that you have.

I went for my 12 week scan today (i'm 11w 5d) i was so excited to see baby as i have had spotting between weeks 4 and 8.

They normally don't measure the nuchal fold here in Swansea, but the sonographer has highlighted that the measurements are 3.7 - 3.9.

I feel that i need to know more, and have therefore requested a CVS. Theres no-one available in South Wales to do this due to holidays, so they have managed to get me an appointment in Bristol on Friday morning.

I always thought that i would be able to take this in my stride. But i can't.

I'm 43 and have a lovely and perfectly healthy 8 month baby girl.

Has anybody been through similar, or had similar measurements? would you mind let me know the outcome?

Thanks in advance,

Marie

I don't know what her measurement was but my sister-in-law was quoted a 1 in 15 "chance" of Downs with her third DS. She had an amnio and he did not have Downs.

Arianasmummy: im 27 and i have a son who will be 9 in feb, i had my nuchal scan last fri and it was worse news than you. they measured the baby as 51mm and a nuchal of 5.7mm. after having this news i went home and cried most of fri aft/eve, but then i pulled myself together and started researching the internet. i found a very intresting website which since have found out all NHS sonographers use for training. it had a pdf book which is a scanning guide to the 11-13wk scan and shows all the possible signes that they can look for (but nhs dont) when scanning for abnormalitys. i waited for my bloods to come back which came back fine but they gave me a 1:9 chance of my baby having downs. as soon as i got this news i asked for a rescan and explained my reasons. the only two mesurments they even look at on nhs is nuchal and crown to rump. which on there own i dont beleve can give you an accurate picture of what is happening to your baby. if you would like to see the guide yourself google FMF and you should be able to find there web site. after goin for a re-scan on wed. the mesurements have changed not dramatically but since i knew the other signes to look for eg presence of a nasal bone or maxilia lenght im more than happy that my baby isnt downs eventhough the nuchal was still 5mm but the crown to rump had changed to 64mm

Florrie - I really don't want to worry you, and I sincerely hope that all is well with your little one. But 5mm nuchal measurement is extremely high and could indicate anything from Downs to a different chromosomal problem to a heart defect or some other genetic problem. The soft markers (nasal bone etc) are helpful indicators, but last year I had a fetus with a 4.5mm nuchal measurement, perfect nasal bone, all other soft markers normal and he definitely had Downs syndrome. You might want to think about getting the heart scanned in detail (they can do this around 16 weeks) even if you don't want CVS or amnio to check out the chromosomes. Heart defects can often be corrected but its best to know in advance. That said, I have seen people on here with very high measurements and then babies born with no problems at all, so fingers crossed you'll be one of those. Very best wishes for the rest of your pregnancy. x

Arianasmummy - I hope your CVS went well? Its a painful wait for the results, but fingers crossed all will be well. You might also want to ask about heart scanning if the CVS comes back all clear. Do let us know how you get on. xx

Florrie, Littlepoot

I saw the consultant yesterday and based on my age and Nuchal measurement the risk is 1 in 3 for Downs. I did not have any blood test results that could be entered, i really wasn't expecting all this and so i never requested downs screening.

As a result i requested a CVS. I'm now waiting for the results.

They have already agreed that if the results are negative i would need to go back for a heart scan. They want me to go back to Bristol for this rather than Cardiff. They feel it would be better as they already know me. A bit of a trek but i know i will be in safe hands.

At present i'm finding it extremely dificult to try and stay calm. Its the not knowing that is doing my head in. I went to the hairdressers this morning and ended up in tears over something very very trivial.

Thanks for all your replies.

Marie
