Hi
I’m a mom to to a toddler and a baby who’s 7 weeks old now.I’ve been feeling depressed,very low and very anxious since my second pregnancy started.I was referred to the perinatal mental health team.I want to try medication because it’s getting worse day by day.Did anyone suffer like me in pregnancy and postpartum with anxiety and depression and what medication and steps have you taken to feel better and cope ?Does medication help to recover from post natal depression ? Does it get better ?

So sorry you are struggling. I had severe depression and anxiety during my pregnancy, and medication has helped tremendously. I went on sertraline and also saw a therapist weekly. This is my third baby, and being on medication has made it so much more enjoyable. I definitely recommend talking to your doctor about getting on an antidepressant. It can make a huge difference.

@Bubbly56
how are you doing now? You sound very similar to me at the start! My baby is 9 months old now but I really really struggled at the start. Was put on medication and had CBT with the perinatal mental health team

Hi
I'm on day 17 of sertraline 25 mg the gp said that she'll increase the dose after a few days and my anxiety has reduced a bit but I'm still having the intrusive thoughts everyday. How're you feeling now ?

@Bubbly56 that’s good you’ve started it. I have been on 50mg of sertraline for about 6 months now and I think it’s really helped! Initially I was on propanolol 3 times a day to keep panic attacks at bay. At first I was so reluctant to take the sertraline as I took 1 pill and had a panic attack and thought the pill had caused that (it wasn’t the pills, I was just having panic attacks a few times a day). The CBT did help too, just helped to talk to
someone outwith my family and friends and I did get some useful strategies that I still use.
it does get better! People have probably been saying this to you already and you’re probably thinking it never will. I thought this and thought it maybe got better for them but I just kept thinking it’ll never get better for me and I would be the 1 person that it would never get better for.

@Bubbly56 does your health visitor still visit quite regularly? My health visitor was amazing! She organised my doctor appointment for me for the sertraline. She referred me for the CBT and she referred me for pelvic floor physio (I had a bad 3rd degree tear during labour which was adding to my anxiety). She also was out a lot , sometimes every day, to see me.

Yes I feel exactly the same as you. I'm on day 10 of 50mg sertraline now. But having very bad anxiety I think it's because I've increased the dose. It might take some time to work.Maybe 4 to 6 weeks ?
