Anyone here on fluoxetine (Prozac)?

Been to the doctors today and been prescribed Prozac for depression and anxiety. I have the medication here in front of me but I'm nervous about taking it for a few reasons. I have had a brief look and it seems the side effects are tiredness, drowsiness and irritable mood which is exactly how I'm feeling now but I'm scared it's going to make me worse before it kicks in a few weeks down the line of that makes sense?

I haven't seen anything about weight gain which is good as there is no way I would take it as that's already an issue which is part of my depression

I suppose I can't really feel much worse than I already do though

Would love to hear people's experiences? Also if anyone has experienced loss of appetite and weight loss from taking it...

Thanks

I took it and was fine. I was tired for a few weeks but no more so than having a toddler tbh! It did help with my depression.

It’s been amazing for me. No feeling like a spaced out zombie (citalopram) or upset stomach (setraline). Not irritable and i didn’t feel worse. Hope it can help you.

I've been on it for over 2 months now and I'm getting on really really well with it. Within about 2 weeks I noticed a significant improvement in my mood. Recently upped my dose slightly as my anxiety was still fairly bad so hoping a higher dose will help that too.

I took citalopram for 2 years and the side effects were awful, the positive effect on my was minimal and I would choose Fluoxetine over the citalopram every day of the week.

I did have slight nausea the first couple of days I took it but that soon went and was nowhere near as bad as on the citalopram. I was lucky and had quick results but it can take 6 weeks to have an effect, be patient with it and good luck.

Oh and it has not increased my weight or appetite at all.

It was the lifeline that pulled me out a deep, dark hole. This is a few years ago now. But I went on it for 3 months and came off of it successfully. Never looked back. It worked brilliantly and I was suffering from PND with psychosis.

No weight gain at all. Mild insomnia sometimes and a dry mouth were my only ongoing side effects- ones I could totally live with. Despite the bouts of mild insomnia, I didn’t feel exhausted at all.

I remember the distinct feeling of finding me again after months of feeling buried alive.

While the side effects would feel yuk to a 'healthy' person, they are merely a blessed relief from the numb misery of depression, and I found that when they lifted, they took a lot of the depression with them.

Thank everyone. Good to hear positive outcomes. Started taking it just over a week ago now and I must say I already feel a slight improvement to my mood and anxiety which is good as I'm guessing it will only improve more as I keep taking. The only thing is that is not helping is this overwhelming tiredness I didn't think i could be any more tired than I was with a toddler but I really am struggling with it and low energy levels so hopefully it will pass as it kicks in! Did anyone else suffer with tiredness when they started taking it?

Yes, hugely. It did get better after about six weeks I think.

Haggisfish · 28/05/2019 13:48

Try taking it last thing at night.

Just an update after taking fluoxetine for 2 months it has saved me from a very dark place. I have overcome the tiredness which at first is horrendous and now I feel great I'm also loosing weight through diet and exercise and I believe taking the fluoxetine has helped also feeling a lot more confident and energetic. I still get some anxiety but not as bad and I feel more in control. I would t think about coming off it anytime soon even though I know it's not a long term drug that's the thing that worries me even though I feel better. Thanks for all your advice Smile
