do antidepressants work?

Hv and gp think I may have pnd. Hv is very keen to start me on antidepressants but gp wants me to talk to a counseller first. Have a 2 yr old and 7 week old. Feel unable to cope cry everyday and finding myself screaming at toddler and ignoring baby alot when he non stop screams. I feel hopeless and have no family support and very little friends who are willing to help.
do antidepressants help? When will they stop me feeling this way?

Go to see the counsellor first. Talking does work. I've had counselling for the sitauation that I am in and it was good tom talk and have someone listen. Validating.

Ad talking to friends too. You sometimes just need to hear that you are not alone. Well, I do. I got talking to a grandmother of a child at dds school once. The things she was saying that happened to her 40 years ago, were just how I was feeling.

Yes, they work. Please seek help as you can feel so much better in a relatively short space of time.

Yes they do for some, but not everyone. Personally they worked extremely well for me - but it was only after trial and error that I found one that I could tolerate. That said, counselling / talking therapies can be just an effective for some people - but only you can make that decision.

Not for everyone - not for me.

I was diagnosed with PND 2/3weeks ago. I knew I had it- I just wasn't myself, cried alot, felt like a failure, questioned whether my baby loved me, felt anxious alot. It felt very hormonal for me, and I love my baby to bits and have bonded well with him; I just felt like I could explode with hormones.
I have been on antidepressants for two weeks. To start with I felt so much worse-no one told me this would happen. I was then given beeta blockers. So far the combination of both has helped hugely. I can sleep and eat again. I no longer question my son's love for me and I feel alot less hormonal. I still on occasion feel anxious but I feel more able to cope.
Therapy has along waiting list and I needed help quick. Don't be scared to get help like pills if you need them. You will be ok (is amazing I can say that just two weeks in but I feel I can fight this now when before I just felt desperate).
