@Jonei
While I don't completely disagree with you. Banning specific breeds is a difficult task, because pit bulls are banned in the uk. Yet people still own them. And when you say breeds such as XL bully's which ones do you mean? Just all big powerful breeds because I think it's pretty known that GSDs, Rottweilers, dobermans etc can be wonderful dogs.
Statically speaking XL bully's aren't in the top 5 list for dog bites in the uk. And in fact Jack Russells are number one on that list, so do we ban them too? The media is very manipulative when it comes to dog attacks, I'm not saying that these dogs haven't done these attacks I'm just saying they're a lot more publicised than the average Labrador.

Dog bites?

I'm more interested in banning the dogs whose 'bite' have ended up with life changing consequences or even death for humans. I don't believe that breeds such as jack russells score highly in this category. And I doubt you do either.

@Jonei
When it comes to a child, any size dog can cause life changing injuries.

Coming onto MN is not really much different though. On another thread, OP was saying she sees a lot of dogs on holiday. You come on and say you hate dogs and hate their owners too.
You are just using MN as a platform for your own warped views. I just hope you never need a dog to sniff you out if trapped under a building... or to hunt for a missing loved one.

Luckily we have technology to replace dogs for those sort of things.

Looking through the list, the American X Bully is well over represented when it comes to fatal attacks on humans. So away with the whataboutery.

Yep.

Mountainpika · 09/04/2023 22:10

I feel sorry for the dogs in that they are bred in the first place, then kept by people who treat them so badly. It's not the dogs' fault. They are just doing what their breed does.

Jonei · 09/04/2023 22:11

Anyway, I'm going to look and see if there's a campaign already started to ban these breeds. If not, I think I'll start one myself.

Windingdown · 09/04/2023 22:11

Jonei · 09/04/2023 22:10

Yep.

UK Search and Rescue teams and the police use dogs to search for use dogs to search for missing people.

I think there are some breeds that simply should not be allowed as domestic pets. A dog breed that was bred to defend livestock etc is going to be a powerful and potentially aggressive dog.
I know all dogs have the ability to be aggressive with poor training and a bad owner but the people who have these dogs want them for status and the fact they look threatening.
There is simply no need for these types of dogs in your average home and banning them would go a long way to improving the situation. I have had a dog in the past, a placid Labrador before I get accused of being anti dog.

@AgapanthusandAcers not sure if you seen my post further down but when my son was in plastics getting a head wound repaired there was a 2 year old child with horrific facial injuries (worse than the photo on this thread)

It was caused by their family "placid" Labrador.

It's not just large bull breeds who cause horrific injuries to children. All dogs should be treated with caution around kids.

No dog is so placid it won't bite. The potential is there with any dog.

Exactly. It's so disingenuous. "What about Jack Russell's?" Spare me the "Deed not breed" nonsense.

Jack Russells aren't killing anyone. Bully XL's are. They need to be banned and any that end up in shelters need to be euthanised, not palmed off on other owners.

Yep. The lengths / whataboutery people will go to, to justify keeping these dangerous breeds. They're so blinkered. And their arguments are ridiculous.

TropicalTheIslandBreeze · 09/04/2023 21:05

Thousands???!!!??? Clearly more money than sense. Thousands of pounds. On a dog. One dog. Kindest thing would be to euthanise it. You can not guarantee that it won't get someone when you let it off leash. Why on earth would you not just get a normal dog? Or put that money towards a human child who could really do with it?

Plenty of people easily spend thousands of pounds on a week long holiday. One week.
That money could also be ‘put towards’ (I’m not really sure what that means in this context) a human child who could really do with it.

Or is it only wasted if it’s being spent on a dog because you don’t like dogs?

Luckily we have technology to replace dogs for those sort of things.

I met a tech dog recently. A dog trained to sniff out sim cards/phones and tablets. If you think tech can replace that, then I suggest you work on the research for it, because right now dogs are good enough.

AgapanthusandAcers · 09/04/2023 22:17

@Ricco12
I am well aware of that. I know someone bitten by a Lab. I meant mine was placid, even so, I never assumed he wasn't capable of turning, all dogs can but some breeds are more unpredictable than others.

Although in fairness, dogs owned by search and rescue will be considerably better trained than dogs owned by the average bod. Also, Im not sure that American X Bully would be considered the average search and rescue dog. They reached fame for other reasons. Like attacking and killing people.

A staffy that was police trained made it to Crufts this year.... yet you still get people saying all staffies (or bull breeds) should be banned.

I was replying to the earlier comment that technology had replaced the need for search and rescue dogs. I'm all for strict regulations for bully breeds and bringing irresponsible owners to account.

I agree labs are very unpredictable and for a long time we're No1 of kids admitted to A&E with injuries yet people thing they are great family pets.
They are a working breed and should be treated as one. Annoys me when I see labs recommended as great pets with kids.

heartbroken22 · 09/04/2023 22:24

Poor child. My daughter is scared of dogs and I'm so glad she is. They're dangerous. They're not just babies we adopt and bring into our homes. They're fuckin dangerous.

The police successfully training and caring for these dogs does not mean that the average person should also have a weapon on a lead. Just like the average person can't carry tazers.

My mum had a dog who nearly died after being by a lab.
My own dog got bitten (and needed surgery) after being bitten by a collie.

You're doing your daughter no favour by encouraging and being pleased about her phobia. That's not going to help her navigate life at all is it. Fantastic parenting.

Yes, this.
Swap 'dog' for 'needle' and see how nuts it sounds.
