I’ve been in the public sector pretty much all my life and now at 50+ have got to the stage where I’m fed up of all the wank speak and bullshit.

I’ve been on the same job for 20+ years, and I’ve always enjoyed the actual job, but not all the rubbish around it, but lately I just can’t be bothered with it.
I work part time, with hours that suit me, initially it was due to young children, then latterly for caring for parents, but it’s always suited.

I just feel now I’m fed up with people coming in with what they think are new whizzy ideas, which we’ve seen before, but new person is trying to get promoted on the back of it, and the staff who have to work with said no new whizzy idea are just collateral damage and will still be there mopping up the shit after new whizzy person disappears off into the sunset.

I’m under no illusions that my employer gives one shiny shit about me-I am literally a number and a bum on a seat.

There are minor opportunities for progression in my role, but if I wanted to work in management it wouldn’t be with my organisation because it’s just a load of politics - although I’m well aware that’s the case in most organisations!

Am I just getting too old/cynical/jaded? Do other people go through this?

I'm only surprised it took you so long, especially in the public sector

Is early retirement an option?

I totally get where you're coming from. So much business bullshit constantly thrown around and after 20 years you will have had the different waves of management changing every thing back and forth to make it look like they have done something.

Have you considered moving roles? I left a job after 10 years and have loved the first three years at my new job - as it's all felt so fresh and a learning curve. It's good for your brain even if it's a bit scary to begin with! Lots more places offer part time and flexible working these days so you can keep your lifestyle. I almost doubled my pay also as my last place had been underpaying me as I had just been there so long.

Also with my new company it's very large, so I am about to start my third role within - not promoting myself but sideways at the same grade with a smaller payrise. It's definitely better to move about a bit to save yourself getting disillusioned and burned out.

secretllama · 26/04/2022 10:17

It's mostly the whole appraisal/goals crap I just can't deal with. I'm there to do my job and get paid and go home. I dont care about continual improvements, moving up the ladder etc. Drives me mad workplaces that focus so much on this.

Apologies for the double post, OP - the site's plaing up with something about the server "hacving a moment"

I see your own opening post appeared 6 times as well ...

JudgeRindersMinder · 26/04/2022 10:19

I could probably retire in about 5 years, I just need to get through the next 5! Sadly no room for a sideways move within the organisation, I’m in a specialist role and the way our grading is structured, to do anything else I have the skills for would be a massive step down in pay

NHS ?
I spent 20 years in the NHS it all sounds very familiar and tedious

Blossomtoes · 26/04/2022 10:22

I can’t imagine staying in the same job for 20+ years. I’d have died of boredom years ago.

crabbitmaw · 26/04/2022 10:23

Do you realise you've created about 8 threads that are all exactly the same?

The site is apparently “having a moment. I’ve reported all the duplicates

It’s a role where no 2 shifts are the same so it’s always been interesting, it’s the bullshit surrounding it that I’m bored with!

Been there op, 14 years I lasted than had the opportunity to make a major life change so I left. Honestly, the relief was immense.
No more " workshops" trying to teach the new methods - no more buzz words. Bliss!

carefullycourageous · 26/04/2022 10:33

I read that the Peter Principle was originally intended as satire but looking at my place I totally see what they mean. There are so many capable people working in lower grades and too many absolute fuckwits higher up. The ideas they come up with are nonsensical.

I am also starting to find it draining and looking for a way to work for myself - I can't face being managed by people who have no idea what they are talking about but have the power to reorganise everything, making it harder to get the actual work done. Grumpy grumpy grumpy.

It’s a role where no 2 shifts are the same so there’s not a boredom factor with the actual job, and that has always kept me going with the bullshit surrounding it, but I’m struggling with it now

I don't see what's wrong with appraisals if they're creative and constructive or an expectation of improvement. There aren't many jobs these days where it's a reasonable attitude to go in do the job at a very basic level and go home.

StellaOlivetti · 26/04/2022 10:41

I could have written your post, OP! I have just retired (early) and I’m still euphoric at not having to deal with this nonsense anymore. When I had five years to go, I sort of mentally left, I carried on doing my job, which I was very good at, but simply stopped going to meetings, answering idiotic emails or getting involved with anything other than my actual job. No one said anything! The kind of person who likes that sort of shit isn’t going to notice or care whether I’m involved in their silly fantasy of being a corporate wunderkind. It made the last five years bearable. Good luck x

Absolutely. My organisation appear to have given up on them. There were a couple of years my part of the appraisal process comprised of 1 line “ see aims/objectives previous year” and my manager agreed with it!

I chucked my CS job after 15 years because I could no longer tolerate fast streamers shitting all over everything then bouncing off to their next post. I was turning in to a right cow and I didn't want to be that person, so I resigned after mat leave.

Totally the same as you. I may give up one year and just be honest and say I don't care about progressing, I'm happy with this, leave me alone and go focus on some other person that does want to progress and increase their stress levels. 😄

For the record, I’ve never worked at a basic level,I’ve always taken pride in doing my job to the best of my ability

@StellaOlivetti I’m very envious! Like you I’m good at my job and well thought of, I’m just struggling with all the hoops I’ve to jump through to achieve what I’ve always achieved very well, but now someone wants a gold star for my efforts!
