Robbing from Tesco with impunity *edited by MNHQ*

I just got off a bus outside a Tesco that is a short walk from where I work to buy some yogurt and fruit for breakfast. On the bus there were three horrendous guys - loud, under the influence, scruffy, swearing, F-ing and Jeffing across the aisles at each other. They got off at the same stop - well, burst off the bus laughing - and burst into Tesco. I watched them saunter up to the booze aisle laughing as they went, nick a bottle of spirits each and walk out laughing in front of all the staff (floorwalking).

I challenged one of the members of staff (a big guy who could handle himself) as to if he was going to let them get away with it. He says they come in every morning and help themselves and nobody is allowed to touch or challenge them. They've contacted the police who don't want to know.

I told him "Right, see you then, I'm helping myself to these strawberries and this yogurt, have a nice day!" and he said I was OK to do that!!! Of course I told him I was joking and I paid.

How in hell have we got to this state of affairs in this country? Or my town specifically?

Tesco are profiteering bastards who overcharge for shite.

I have absolutely no fucks to give about someone shoplifting from there in broad daylight.

And where do you buy your food? Would you be ok with people shoplifting from there?

Kweeky · 11/08/2023 11:43

There was an interview on R4 about the bank and Farage.
It seems that a few years ago the Gov, I think Cameron’s introduced guidelines on inclusivity to companies in the U.K. so rather than making money your aim is to be seen to be inclusive and kind and must produce evidence of this.
Similarly the Gov are all about reducing sentences for non violent crimes, not punishing young people etc But being hard on racism and phones.
So this is where we are.Tescos hand are tied (can’t punish the shoplifters) the police hands are tied -no point spending hours building a prosecution as slapped hand is the result. So we have to live with it - perhaps a mass writing to MPs might make them look at legislation again.

Kweeky · 11/08/2023 11:44

Phobes not phones

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2023 11:45

Yes, I do think we are heading towards anarchy unless we do something to stop the wealth divide getting wider and people feeling a sense of injustice so that they are able to kids themselves that what they are doing is justified and reasonable

I feel like this comment is just such a fucking cop out.

So much of this entitlement is down to material acquisition and is being exacerbated by the relentless spending on kids. Stop constantly buying your kids stuff!!! Honest to god you are thinking back to simpler times when times genuinely were simpler.

The main spend was housing and food. Now it’s Apple and Nike and fuck knows what the latest thing is as I’ve zoned out. Once we made capitalism God then morality went out the window. Stop blaming everything thing else and look what’s happening in your own family first. Then your community and then your country. You can always make personal changes to help society. It’s so much easier to blame everyone else and do absolutely nothing yourself.

It is not kind to subject your staff to such crap every day of the week. It's the same guys going in every single day, they will be on their Christmas card list next.

And of course the problem is that if all shoplifters were caught and sentenced to a spell in prison then where do they all go and who is paying for that?

As for all the ‘Tesco are bastards, good on them’ types, remember that when it’s your car that’s nicked or your house that is burgled.

And they do. It’s the same organised gangs

Agreed.

It used to happen in a small town I lived in.

95% of the crime was due to the actions of about a dozen individuals who were in and out of jail (fines hadn't worked) but unfortunately they weren't all 'banged up' at the same time.

Then someone dropped a blooper and 'did' a house belonging to someone's granny. Some other gang members jumped him down an alley and beat him to a pulp.

A big trial ensued resulting in several GBH convictions, substantial sentences, and a significant drop in the crime rate.

I suspect the Police are quite aware who these yobs are. They are probably waiting for them to 'up their game' and then they'll come down hard.

Honour among thieves!

I feel sorry for the granny, both for being burgled and having such a terrible grandson.

I read on BBC that Co-Op said some areas are becoming no-go areas for shops. They are losing too much to keep some branches open.

It's all over the country now OP

I haven't seen much news but my sister tells me the police are doing similar to San Francisco now - they won't bother with a theft under $200 over there, she says the police have made a similar announcement here?

My bestie lives in Brixton and is surprised that my local supermarket doesn't have the alcohol locked away.

It does feel as if the governments across the world will do nothing, make of that what you will.

This is the orders that the police have had from the cps. It costs too much money to arrest and prosecute them only for them to be given a slap on the hand.

Nah…. I may have sympathy for you (even though I don’t know you from Adam), but I have little sympathy for a very large corporation that is destroying small businesses while paying peanuts to its staff, putting them in danger, the meanwhile it’s top executive are massively rich.

Sorry but your “one size fits all” approach doesn’t cut it for me.

Tabitha1960 · 11/08/2023 11:54

I saw two big, scary looking men in my local small Co Op open a massive holdall and scoop every bit of meat off the chiller shelf into it. I immediately went into the next aisle and told a member of staff. They said the security guard knocked off at 6pm and as he was on mimimum wage, he wasn't going to tackle them.

I was absolutely gobsmacked.

Three days later I was opening my front door when a gaunt, jerky young man came up and asked me if I liked steak. I said I didn't, I preferred burgers, and he said "We have some of those as well." I asked where they came from and he said "the Co Op, but they are all in my mate's freezer so they have not gone off."

The magic number is California is $900. I am from the SF Bay Area and had family visiting me last week. They said anything totalling under $900 isn’t a crime. Some criminals take a calculator with them, adding up as they steal.

Of course this is America, so there’s every possibility the owner of the shop will come beat the shit out of you with a baseball bat. I don’t know if that’s a crime.

I don’t have any sympathy for Tesco but do you honestly think that these people are sitting at home discussing the merits of the Tesco corporation before robbing it? No. They would do the exact same if it was a small independent off licence.

Quite. They're hardly Robin Hood and his Merrie Men.

I think that part of the problem is that it's no longer taboo for people to steal from shops and it's very easy for them to sell their obviously stolen goods on. If people would stop buying off shop lifters and ostracised them for stealing then it would reduce the incentive to do so. At the moment stealing = profit + no repressions

Our prisons are full so judges have to take that into consideration

Can you kindly cite your sources for the assertion that criminals are taking calculators with them to stay under a $900 threshold? Thanks.

We are not allowed to approach shop lifters for our own safety. Always been tesco policy. We had 2 men fill bags with 1.2k worth of alcohol this week and just run out the store. We have 1 security guard, but thieves know he does late shift so come bright and early.

Not true. Was given a values award for tackling a shoplifter! Young and stupid. Why the f was I risking needles, knives etc for little above minimum wage?

hate to be ‘that’ person, but go on twitter and say women don’t have a penis and suddenly plod will find the resources.

A small family run off license operates very differently, anyone who has stolen or behaved badly is not allowed in anymore, any theft has the guy behind the till tackling the thief down. While you may get away with stealing from the local Tesco not so much from your Indian family run off license store in your street. Of course I’m talking from personal experience, you may have a different one.

Fine. You carry on justifying theft however it suits you. I just hope your haven’t brought up children with those morals.

SerendipityJane · 11/08/2023 12:12

When those in power have no need to hide their lawbreaking and contempt for the law, it's not really hard to see how it trickles down.

So shoplifters look at Boris Johnson and decide to rip off Tesco? Unlikely.

I have absolutely no fucks to give about someone shoplifting from there in broad daylight.

No fucks to give about the fact that it is indicative of the increasingly lawless society we live in?

No fucks to give about the poor staff who have to work in an environment where this happens?

No fucks to give about the knock-on effect on prices?

No fucks to give about the fact that people allowed to get away with this sort of theft will feel emboldened and might be trying your front door to see if they can walk in and take something?
No fucks to give about the fact that the men stealing large quantities of alcohol which they may not otherwise be able to afford will probably get blind drunk and engage in more extreme anti-social behaviour/violence etc?
