Robbing from Tesco with impunity *edited by MNHQ*

I just got off a bus outside a Tesco that is a short walk from where I work to buy some yogurt and fruit for breakfast. On the bus there were three horrendous guys - loud, under the influence, scruffy, swearing, F-ing and Jeffing across the aisles at each other. They got off at the same stop - well, burst off the bus laughing - and burst into Tesco. I watched them saunter up to the booze aisle laughing as they went, nick a bottle of spirits each and walk out laughing in front of all the staff (floorwalking).

I challenged one of the members of staff (a big guy who could handle himself) as to if he was going to let them get away with it. He says they come in every morning and help themselves and nobody is allowed to touch or challenge them. They've contacted the police who don't want to know.

I told him "Right, see you then, I'm helping myself to these strawberries and this yogurt, have a nice day!" and he said I was OK to do that!!! Of course I told him I was joking and I paid.

How in hell have we got to this state of affairs in this country? Or my town specifically?

Interesting to read this post in juxtaposition with the autostic teenager arrested by 6 officers for saying that one of them looked like a lesbian like her Nan.

No, she said the officer looked like her nan who is a lesbian.

Well, eventually you get the breakdown of society as the social norms and values which held society together collapse and the people who are currently doing "the right thing" stop doing the right thing because they see everyone else getting away with doing the wrong thing and getting rewarded for it. I think we are getting very close to that point. Just things like how much rubbish and littering is everywhere and how people seem to care less and less about their immediate environment is a sign of this imo.

We like to look abroad as useful comparisons for successful policy making. I think we’d be very, very wise to look abroad right now and see what’s going on.

Tesco are profiteering bastards who overcharge for shite.

I have absolutely no fucks to give about someone shoplifting from there in broad daylight.

Glittertwins · 11/08/2023 11:11

I believe it also depends on the level to which the security guard is licenced as to how much they can confront / restrain. The higher the licence, the more they can do but obviously the price of security increases too

dawngreen · 11/08/2023 11:12

One small independent shop gets raided raided 4 times a week, and they seem to steal the latest fad at the time. He says its adults as well as teens. Then they wonder were the small shops went.

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2023 11:13

Why TF would you challenge the staff about it?

Why did you not go and challenge the 3 men who were actually committing the crime?

Why didn’t the bus passenger march up to the three male youths on the bus. and demand to know why they were boasting about committing a shop lifting offence?

Hmmmm. That’s a tricky one. What a sensible tactic that would have been to stamp out petty theft. I’m sure the bus passenger would have had a very interesting, calm conversation about it and at the end hearts and minds would have been changed.

Forest Hill? They even keep cans of deodorant and tubes of sun cream behind the till now as the druggies would just walk in and brazenly steal them to sell on. I wouldn’t challenge them either. My life is worth more than £20 worth of toiletries.

I saw young man risk his life apprehending a shoplifter- He was manager of one of the smaller branches of a supermarket on edge of an estate- I said ''Not worth getting stabbed for, surely..?''He replied ''If they know we are a soft target, they come in even more to steal from here''..

I actually haven’t, I’m incredibly lucky to have a job that can only be performed by humans. I strongly believe that the robotization of society and advent of AI is only going to benefit extreme capitalism. The working class is getting massively fuc—ed.

Don't come crying when the same emboldened scumbags rob your house then.

dawngreen · 11/08/2023 11:20

We have drug users in our area who argue and fight at the chemist waiting for their meds. And shops get windows smashed on that street. When we owned a book shop. We had a drug user smash our main window, and hanging baskets. He got refused entry at the tavern opposite. We had to close until the window got repaired. The police insisted on taking finger prints from the blood on the broken window. Result five minutes in court them looking at the pictures of damage, and a comment of they can claim on insurance. We know where he lives, and he is still smashing shop windows.

OneTwoThreeShake · 11/08/2023 11:28

There's generally a threshold for the police to take action where shoplifting is concerned. And I guess there's a fine line to tread when it comes to tackling shoplifters to ensure you don't put yourself or others in danger, and you maintain propriety when physically dealing with them, lest you be accused of being heavy handed, harassment or being inappropriate. To many shops it just isn't worth it.

WaltzingWaters · 11/08/2023 11:28

Yolkpoker · 11/08/2023 09:30

Aldi clearly don’t have this policy. Ours has a young woman as a security guard, I’ve seen her race right out of the store and down the street to catch shoplifters. She’s super fit and strong , but I’d be appalled if my adult daughter had to put herself in this kind of situation for aldi wages, i can’t believe it’s expected of her.

Yeah I saw a security guard run after someone in my local Aldi (in a decent area) recently. I’ve also started being asked to pick up my bags/look in them at the checkout in Aldi so they can check nothing is hiding in them before they start ringing things through (something they did for everyone, not just me looking dodgy!).

NewName122 · 11/08/2023 11:31

Yet in my shopping centre I watched security chasing a group of what looked like 13 year olds around a few months ago because they were being a bit loud 🤣 worlds gone mad.

I think technology has to take some blame. The fact that we're all reading this, being made aware of how prevalent it is becoming, just makes it easier for the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" type of people to start doing this with no thought for the lack of morality involved. Or they follow idiots online who spout a load of nonsense about "taking what's yours"/rich controlling us, and get spurred on to do it.

Before the advent of the internet, most people didn't really have anything much to do with people living in other areas. Their sense of "elsewhere" or "other" was more heightened than it is now. "That London" was seen as either "where the posh people live" or "where you'll get mugged." Now, people mix online all the time with people from all over the world. They are much more aware of what actually does happen elsewhere. Things "catch on" very quickly and easily, and this can be something inane and harmless like the latest TikTok dance, or highy dangerous attitudes and ways of life eg Andrew Tate, or the changing idea of morality eg the idea that shop lifting is not that bad and is in fact quite easy to do. Groupthink is not a good thing.

Basically the world had a bit more ignorance before the internet. Rumours were widely believed eg if you were told as a kid by your parents that you'd go to prison for shoplifting you probably believed them. Now, kids just go online and can google statistics and see reports and now footage of people getting away with this stuff.

Getting rid of staff in shops was such a terrible, terrible idea. Spending millions on developing self-scanning systems was a waste of money if it just means that fewer staff in shops gives people an increased sense of confidence that they can get away with stuff.

Yes, I do think we are heading towards anarchy unless we do something to stop the wealth divide getting wider and people feeling a sense of injustice so that they are able to kids themselves that what they are doing is justified and reasonable. Technology has generally NOT helped.

Makes me feel wistful for holidays to rural backwaters where honesty boxes in local shops are a thing. Or do people steal from these now too?

RudsyFarmer · 11/08/2023 11:38

So much of the criminality is linked.

It’s a nice idea to imagine a Tiny Tim situation where some starving child is stealing a Turkey for a family Christmas dinner. Don’t cry into your hanky for too long. I’m sure the thread would nicely run through shoplifting, drugs, child exploitation and human trafficking, domestic abuse, prostitution, and much much more. All in the sane stable and the human suffering is immense.
