Robbing from Tesco with impunity *edited by MNHQ*

I just got off a bus outside a Tesco that is a short walk from where I work to buy some yogurt and fruit for breakfast. On the bus there were three horrendous guys - loud, under the influence, scruffy, swearing, F-ing and Jeffing across the aisles at each other. They got off at the same stop - well, burst off the bus laughing - and burst into Tesco. I watched them saunter up to the booze aisle laughing as they went, nick a bottle of spirits each and walk out laughing in front of all the staff (floorwalking).

I challenged one of the members of staff (a big guy who could handle himself) as to if he was going to let them get away with it. He says they come in every morning and help themselves and nobody is allowed to touch or challenge them. They've contacted the police who don't want to know.

I told him "Right, see you then, I'm helping myself to these strawberries and this yogurt, have a nice day!" and he said I was OK to do that!!! Of course I told him I was joking and I paid.

How in hell have we got to this state of affairs in this country? Or my town specifically?

Allowing shoplifters to blatantly steal right in front of staff with no consequences must be horrible for their mental health and sense of dignity, even if they do work for a big supermarket.

So shoplifters look at Boris Johnson and decide to rip off Tesco? Unlikely.

Of course not. How silly are you ?

However, the massed ranks of society see the people who make the laws break them with no consequences, and wonder what the point of "the law" is.

Especially when this thread shows that "the law" is very much about picking on the easy targets, and leaving the harder ones "for someone else".

Corruption is corrosive - the clue is in the first four letters being shared. If you tolerate it (and the UK seems to positively encourage it) then don't be surprised when there is no respect for "the law".

It starts very very early. As I often like to say: "I pay my taxes. It buys me civilisation". With more posters than not on this thread bemoaning our descent into anarchy, it seems a fair stance. If we taxed a bit more, and spent a bit more, we'd have a slightly nicer civilisation.

No need to get personal. That's so frequently the case on here. I disagree, therefore I'm "silly".
No point in discussing a serious issue when you get personal insults.
I'm not stooping to that level.

I do feel you are over thinking it. The average Ned doesn’t think that big. He sees his mate take a bar of chocolate and nothing happens. He takes two bars of chocolate and nothing happens. Him and his mate then take a couple of beers and nothing happens. They then get to realise that they can stroll into a shop, fill their pockets and nothing happens. I very much doubt they have much of an idea who the prime minister is let alone their law making or breaking.

Maireas · 11/08/2023 12:45

Spot on, @PriamFarrl .

You’re not painting the ne’erdowell in a victim status with this scenario. So it’s unpalatable here.

My prediction is in the end you will not be allowed into a shop unless you have an app on your phone to validate your credit card details, like one of those Amazon Automated shops.

There will be barriers at the entrance to stop you getting in if you can't pay or have caused trouble in there before.

usernother · 11/08/2023 12:47

@MymateDave We are not allowed to approach shop lifters for our own safety. Always been tesco policy. We had 2 men fill bags with 1.2k worth of alcohol this week and just run out the store. We have 1 security guard, but thieves know he does late shift so come bright and early.

I someone who was security at Tescos. He was told not to physically apprehend shoplifters. He did, hurt his back, and got a telling off.

I hope so. Can't happen soon enough!

stbrandonsboat · 11/08/2023 12:53

It happens in my village. They go into the coop, help themselves and then leave without paying. The community police officer told us himself at the last village meeting.

Wsmi · 11/08/2023 12:54

In other news…..7 police officers from West Yorkshire Police arrested a 16 year old girl for saying that one of them looked like her lesbian grandmother. And they did inside the girl’s home.

Yes, 7 police officers. Now try and get the police to arrest real criminals. Good luck. These clowns are supposed to enforce law and order. What a joke.

Some branches of Aldi already have that I believe.

What happens if they are banned from the shop and try reentry (assuming they are local). Do the police assist then?

AllOfThemWitches · 11/08/2023 12:56

I wouldn't be challenging a morally questionable character with nothing to lose either.

SerendipityJane · 11/08/2023 12:57

Your average Ned doesn't think - it's what makes them a Ned.

However, I think. Or try my best. And right now I think there is fuck all point in trying to uphold the law - or help uphold it - when the people that make the fucking laws not only can't be bothered to uphold it but insult what little intelligence I have by trying to gaslight me into submission.

So shops become fortresses in essence and people want to argue that societal breakdown isn’t happening?!

I have seen they are experimenting with automated shops.

I guess you could say this is a good thing if you are a well behaved person.

But you might end up with older people, people with learning disabilities, people without bank accounts etc. Who can't use shops.

It would be better to just tackle crime/ antisocial beyond shops now, rather than give good grounds for this to be implemented.

No, they just keep coming back. There's nobody who can stop them. The police officer said they're doing it regularly and didn't seem to think there was anything anyone could do. We've had a resident community arsonist for five years and they can't do anything about him either apparently. Shoplifting isn't a reason to call the police out unless it turns violent.

This is what the government wants ultimately, so they're not bothered. It's social engineering.

BodegaSushi · 11/08/2023 13:02

A JoJo Maman in a neighbouring (well to do) area had to close because of the constant theft. Gangs of women would come in, grab handfuls of clothing, and walk out. Staff (also women) too terrified to challenge.

Crazy.

Baconking · 11/08/2023 09:29

Interesting that you think a man who you've assumed can handle himself should confront 3 horrendous, under the influence guys.
I'm not sure he would have come out of it well if they'd attacked him, despite his size.

The police aren't even kid well enough to deal with this shit, let alone the staff at Tesco, who didn't sign up to deal with this shit.

BodegaSushi · 11/08/2023 13:03

I wasn't arguing society isn't breaking down.

Amazon are doing it for automation reasons with the benefit bad customers/thieves are excluded.

I would prefer this not to happen which is why shoplifting should be addressed.

You might end up with a situation with only the best customers can use Tesco etc. which offers the cheapest best quality food. Everyone else has to use a rip off small trader, who puts up with bad customers because they can charge a high profit margin.

I think you’ll find the small traders will no longer be there.
