Robbing from Tesco with impunity *edited by MNHQ*

I just got off a bus outside a Tesco that is a short walk from where I work to buy some yogurt and fruit for breakfast. On the bus there were three horrendous guys - loud, under the influence, scruffy, swearing, F-ing and Jeffing across the aisles at each other. They got off at the same stop - well, burst off the bus laughing - and burst into Tesco. I watched them saunter up to the booze aisle laughing as they went, nick a bottle of spirits each and walk out laughing in front of all the staff (floorwalking).

I challenged one of the members of staff (a big guy who could handle himself) as to if he was going to let them get away with it. He says they come in every morning and help themselves and nobody is allowed to touch or challenge them. They've contacted the police who don't want to know.

I told him "Right, see you then, I'm helping myself to these strawberries and this yogurt, have a nice day!" and he said I was OK to do that!!! Of course I told him I was joking and I paid.

How in hell have we got to this state of affairs in this country? Or my town specifically?

How low is society going?

They shouldn't have been on the bus acting like they were either.
Should have not been.let on, or thrown off.

Yes, because a 100% true story that someone posted on a forum means the whole world is heading towards barbarism.

Do you read NYT?

You will understand that this is likely to be interpreted as a made up story. —which it is— possibly.

Grow up.

Why TF would you challenge the staff about it?

Why did you not go and challenge the 3 men who were actually committing the crime?

Why is this guy on minimum wage going to go and get the shit kicked out of him by 3 men, just for them to come back tomorrow and do the same thing.

I saw an incident in Aldi and had to give a police statement.

A man went in and stole alcohol.
The security man asked politely to search his bags and then man refused, it escalated and the man punched the security guard in the face and ran. The security guy ran after him and tackled him to the ground and took back the alcohol.

The man who stole and punched the security guy got a slap on the wrist.
The security guy got fine for assault because he tackled him and got sacked from his job.

It’s sometimes not worth it to confront them.

I do think the police should be doing more though and these people need consequences for their actions, as it’s not fair on those of us who struggle to pay our bills and still pay for things.

We have a serious alcohol and drug problem in this country and this is a common issue in many shops.

I think let’s see how far this shit goes. A social policy experiment if you will.

Let’s fawn to the all those who demand to be treated as victims. Submit to those who commit crime and arrest those who disagree with the bourgeoisie.

Well, eventually you get the breakdown of society as the social norms and values which held society together collapse and the people who are currently doing "the right thing" stop doing the right thing because they see everyone else getting away with doing the wrong thing and getting rewarded for it. I think we are getting very close to that point. Just things like how much rubbish and littering is everywhere and how people seem to care less and less about their immediate environment is a sign of this imo.

It’s a sad reflection on the society we are becoming, or have become, that we accept stealing as inevitable. What’s next? Will it soon be acceptable to ignore violence?

TheGaffer · 11/08/2023 10:44

Many years ago I worked in Safeway and almost exactly the same thing happened…local bad boy walzed in picked up a couple of cases of beer off the shelf and wakes right out giving me a wink on his way out the door..right past the duty manager. I asked the duty manager if I should call the police…he looked embarrassed but said better not to. I was baffled at the time why he was allowed to do this meanwhile the poor single mum who had snuck in some toothpaste down the back of the buggy was stopped and searched on the way out and the police called on her.
The shop workers are scared and typically live in communities right beside these horrors..there is no way you want to attract trouble to yourself on a minimum wage.
that local bad boy is currently festering in prison having been found guilty of multiple murders and physical violence.
I despair, but I understand. Without a guaranteed protection of the police, why would you invite possible personal retribution on yourself?

We already do ignore violence especially if its towards women and children

TheGaffer · 11/08/2023 10:45

And that was in 1993….so things haven’t changed that much…

Midwinterblues · 11/08/2023 10:45

Where are people’s morals in all this (the perpetrators I mean)? The moral compass of society has been knocked away hasn’t it, we used to know what was right and wrong and we acted accordingly - doesn’t have to be about religion either but our own sense of morality.
The fact that some people are excusing it is interesting too.

And I love your username OP, one of my favourite historical figures (and book!).

ChaToilLeam · 11/08/2023 10:48

I don’t blame the staff, of course they don’t want to be injured in the course of doing their not incredibly well paid jobs.

Police need to get their house in order and their priorities right: not pursuing Twitter posters for wrongthink or manhandling terrified autistic girls, but actually going after and dealing with genuine criminals. That takes a bit more effort and guts though, and support from the government too.

BCCoach · 11/08/2023 10:51

13 years of Tory rule has defunded the police far beyond the dreams of any leftie agitators.

Interesting to read this post in juxtaposition with the autostic teenager arrested by 6 officers for saying that one of them looked like a lesbian like her Nan.

Indeed. It's like the police have forgotten how to actually be police.

He probably couldn’t be arsed with a busybody making his nightmare job even more of a nightmare.

Its Friday - relax!

Urgh

Onelifeonly · 11/08/2023 10:55

0ne of my grown up children works in a place where groups walking in and helping themselves is not uncommon. They try to prevent it but ultimately it's not always possible. They also call the police but the perpetrators are usually gone by then (unless alone and under the influence).

This is not a supermarket and far from up north. Unfortunately, it happens. I'm not sure it's a new thing though. I witnessed similar 30 years ago in NYC.

I expect it's an everyday event that you just happened to chance upon OP. A few months back I saw a girl wearing a dressing gown (presumably stolen) run out of our local Tesco clutching a whole bundle of clothes. The security guard pursued her until another member of staff told him not to bother. I guess providing more security is more expensive to large companies than the losses they make from stealing.

Doesn't mean that most people aren't honest.

Sandra1984 · 11/08/2023 10:55

Ohh…. You mean those robots that have taken away all the working class jobs leaving supermarkets with no humans are having a problem because the yobs are stealing the food?

why am I not saddened one bit by this?

Sandra1984 · 11/08/2023 10:58

And the government has cut police numbers and now they can’t stop the yobs from stealing from large corporations?

Poetic justice…. finally.

Weirdly it’s the opposite in my local Tesco! I’ve seen people steal a few times in there and they always go after them. I once saw them refuse to let a homeless man go until he handed back a bottle of coke that he had stole

Because one probably unthreatening- looking man is not difficult to tackle.

You need bravado, an aggressive attitude and preferably several mates to get away with being an overt thief.

If the money saved by replacing humans with automation is more than the money lost by increased wastage through shoplifting, then the retailers are fine with that. Automation doesn't have to do a job better than humans, it just has to do it cheaper.

TheFormidableMrsC · 11/08/2023 11:05

My eldest works for a high end cosmetic business in London. Women regularly come in and help themselves, one woman scooped loads of products from an under counter cupboard. Staff can challenge but not stop them. The security guard seems to be just there as a decoration. He is also not allowed to stop them or touch them. I just don't understand it. Why on Earth is this allowed to happen?

Well, the Mob means something different in America doesn’t it?

They used the phrase ‘a mob’ not ‘The Mob’. Perhaps a dictionary might help?
